A while ago, I bought a Brother MFC-J6555DW ink tank printer so I could print things larger than US Letter.
I have been very happy with the printer and now use Scott size pages for my albums.
But I've hit the point where I need more ink. And a full set of ink tanks for this printer costs $260.00.
There are generic tanks available, but a lot of them get bad reviews.
I'd like to buy an 11x17 laser printer, but they're VERY expensive.

That's a good price. But I need LC406 cartridges.
I guess $68 a color isn't a horrible price when you get 5000 pages out of the cartridge. That's about 5.4 cents per page.

I just had a DOH! moment.
The printer came with LC406 ink tanks in it, which only do 1500 pages per cartridge. The XL replacements I bought do 5000 pages per cartridge. So, not quite as bad as I thought. These should last a lot longer.

You should start a GoFundMe for a large format color laser! I'm on my second HP CP5225DN. They aren't cheap ($1,900 new, about $1,000 for an almost-new used at B&H), but the print quality is unbeatable. It's actually a very old model without the newer bells and whistles like WiFi connectivity, but it's still made because it's HP's only large-format color LaserJet that will print reliably on thicker paper. When my old one was getting to end-of-life, I tried replacing it with a more modern color laser printer from Brother, but the small text on my album pages wasn't as crisp. The HP does such a good job at fine printing on thicker paper. As with all lasers, the toner's expensive (about $1,000 for a full set), but it lasts a long time. I think I only replaced the toner cartridges on my old one twice in 10+ years of use printing almost nothing but album pages – once at about 6 years, and once when trying to fix issues I was having with it toward end-of-life (and I subsequently put the second replacement set in my new printer, so they're still being used). If you ever think of taking the leap, let me know and I'll print the files of your choice on the paper of your choice to give you an idea of what the end product looks like without spending any real money.

I'm debating. For longevity, I prefer in over toner. And this printer uses pigment-based ink instead of dye-based ink. another plus.
I just found a website that sells cartridge refill kits for the LC406XL. So, that may be the way to go.

I have a solution now, but it requires I own two sets of cartridges.
The MFC-J6555DW remembers the serial number of the last cartridge you inserted into it. So, when a cartridge runs out of ink, you need to slide another cartridge in so it "forgets" the cartridge you have.
Then you can take the existing cartridge and refill it.
I found these inks online at a reasonable price:
I think I can get 2-3 refills out of these bottles
And here is a video on how to refill the cartridges:
The only downside is that I need to own two sets of cartridges, so there is an initial investment of a full set of ink cartridges.
