I retired from all employment this year. Sitting at the bottom of the wardrobe was an old cardboard carton containing our childhood stamp collection. This was brought over from my father’s house when he passed away several years ago. I have not looked at it since the 1960s. The collection was originally started by my father when he was a youngster in about the 1940s. Myself and two siblings started mucking around with it when we lived in Greece in the mid 1960s. No television then. The collection consists almost entirely of stamps pre 1966 with a few dating back as far as the British Penny Reds. The largest cohorts of stamps are from Australia, Great Britain, Greece, Netherlands, United States, Germany and France. There are small numbers from about seventy other countries. We have Australian stamps because of course that is where we reside. Many of the stamps of Greece and Netherlands we would have because we lived there for several years while my father worked in the Australian consulates. I think my father collected German stamps because in the 1940s and 1950s packets of stamps were given away as a promotion with ETA peanut butter. There were packets of stamps attached to the jars of peanut butter and for some reason they contained a lot of the German Reich stamps including a lot from the inflationary period with face values in the millions of Marks.
