Feel like playing a game? I don’t know about the weather were you are, but here it’s raining today. So, no archery golf and no weeding. OK, so that last one is a good thing. What is archery golf? I walk around shooting an arrow into 18 different hay wheels. I use a flu-flu arrow with a judo point for the first shot and an arrow with a field point as a ‘putter’. Playing cards serve as the ‘hole’ on each hay bale. Hey, (no pun intended) I live in a rural area on an island (smile). Anyway, back to philately and playing a game. How about a game of philately golf? I was reading an old (1938) publication of the Globe Stamp Company. Near the end they printed a page of ‘Outstanding Single Stamps’. There are 21 of them. As a group let’s see how fast we can claim ownership of every stamp on the list. Any order, one stamp (hole) at a time. The rules are simple, just reply with information on any ONE of these 21 stamps that no one else has yet claimed … one that’s in your collection. I’ll go first, Nova Scotia – Queen Victoria 8.5c Green Issued: 1860 Sc. 11 Your turn …

My entry is the used Dominican Republic Scott 299 triangle. It is a 3 cent value depicting President Trujillo. The set was issued to commemorate the ratification of a treaty setting the frontier between the Dominican Republic and Haiti in 1935. This stamp was issued 3rd of October.

I wanted the 'NORMANDIE' but renden has beaten me to it - also I love the 'naked Maja', but I can't find it - I love those Spanish beauties! So - going for the first flight from Oz to England - SG 153 from 1934, the 1/6d. dull purple. P.S. Sorry, the pfennig has just dropped - you want to see the stamp! - so here are a few of mine.

Oops ! Sorry Hugh I see you only want ONE stamp per member So I deleted my multiples., apologies. No worries ... I was enjoying reading them just before they vanished. I continue to be impressed by the many thousands of scans you have of your collections. And, how quickly you can access them. BTW, you mentionned the NZ ad stamps. I do have some. I don't collect NZ, but they're a lot of fun to show to beginning collectors at our club's workshops. For the purposes of Philately Golf (smile), I thought I'd leave them for a NZ collector or specialist to post ... they'll know a lot more than I do. But, I have no dobut you could play all 21 holes of Philately Golf all by yourself! Maybe we need a regular TSF scavenger hunt every couple of months.

A fun game indeed. If you'll forgive showing a mint stamp when the list asks for used, I can contribute the Netherlands #222, one of my favourite triangular stamps.

Great work everyone!
After 24 hours, the count is now 14 out of 21 … just 7 to go.
So, unless anyone feels otherwise, let’s open it up for people to take a second swing. Then we can all head to the clubhouse for a cool one.
Cheers,

hello renden - your Canadian AIR label is a nice stamp. I may be very wrong, but having looked at the catalogue for Canada, from what I can see your 1930 commemorative 5c. deep brown appears to have been preceded by SG No. 274 in olive-brown - in 1928 - by another 5c. AIR mail stamp - which also appears to be a commemorative - I've attached a picture for you. This, despite Hugh's quiz sheet saying that the 1930 stamp was 'the only Canadian Air Mail Commemorative'. Curiously, as you can see, my example has been ovptd. to alter the value to read 6 cents, although I don't see an ovptd. stamp in my catalogue. Also, the stamp on Hugh's quiz sheet is described as 15c. which assume is an error. As an expert on Canadian material, are you able to shed light on this anomaly, please;-)

thanks Rene - very attractive, and desirable of course. For some reason the 1930 non-surcharged AIR fetches quite decent money - oddly, slightly more for used than mint .......... but whatever, it makes substantially more than the 1928 design, where mint is the slightly more valuable - think I prefer the design of the earlier stamp. Surcharged examples seem to add nothing to the value of importance, but the 1928 stamp if imperforate, is worth a substantial sum. thanks again.

Philippines Scott C52 (10 centavos rose carmine) and C53 (30 centavos orange red) were issued on December 2, 1935 to mark the first Trans-Pacific flight from Manila to San Francisco December 2-5, 1935. Here is a cover franked with both stamps from my China Clipper collection.

Seeing how Hugh has opened the door for a second posting (the horse was already out of the barn ) I went looking and as suspected I have most all these stamps. The problem I am having is that the description, photo and Scott numbers are not correct on some of these. The Cuba #288 is as described, 10 cents, but the photo is the 1 cent value. My #288 is used rather than mint so I moved on to the Czechoslovakia used #197. The photo and number are correct but it is not a 10 cent as described. This 1934 stamp is from the set commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Czechoslovakian Legion which fought in WWI. This particular stamp depicts Ensign Heyduk with colors.

Our catalogs do not seem to agree on the CVs Both Unitrade Canada Specialized 2024 and Scott 2024 give a CV of $150.00 for a MNH-VF C2, and $24 for a VF-used C2. I will not go into the other CVs René

I make it that there are eight remaining to be accounted for ...... Philippines, Hungary, Afghanistan, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand, Panama and Egypt - put me right please Hugh:-) OK ... so after two rounds (two days), where do we stand? First, we've discovered that the Globe Stamp Company of NYC, way back in 1938, published a page of "Outstanding Stamps" that would have been a bit confusing to the stamp collectors at the time. Some of the Scott numbers were wrong (or perhaps have changed since then) and some errors may have been made is describing some of the stamps. All part of the fun, and a challenge to our research skills, I suppose. Second, we've discovered that some people have some awesome examples of this material ... wow! Third ... we have had a couple of interesting side discussions (early Canadian airmail stamps, for example). Cool. But, where do we stand right now? There are FIVE STAMPS left to find. According to Globe's description, they are: Afghanistan - Sc. 291 3c - "The only stamp in the world with entwinned numerals" Cuba - Sc. 288 10c - "Pan-American Conference" Phillippines - Sc. 389 8c - "Showing the landing of Magellan" Panama - Sc. 204 10c - "Chorrera Falls" Egypt - Sc. 204 20c - "Showing Anthony Eden" Let's make it an open round ... anyone can play any or all of these. Let's get it done and end the game. Then go relax with your favourite beverage.
