Good afternoon everyone & thanks for allowing me to join your forum. My name is Rob & I live in Central France & have been a collector of too many things all my life. Predominantly I collect Antiques & interesting things from the 18thC & earlier but never had much interest in stamps apart from the obligatory schoolboy album. My Grandfather though was a serious collector throughout his life & as I am now the custodian(I will never sell them) of his collection that is the reason why I am here. He died in 1970 so no stamps later than that but I hope to discover his mode of collecting if that makes sense & when I do that I hope to fill in some of the gaps. I bought & sold Antiques as well as collecting them for 30 years but I'm retired now & in reality I was just a collector who sold a bit to pay the bills. 1st on the list is an up to date Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue- I have my Grandads ones with all his annotations & notes but they are from 1968! Although I said I never had much interest in stamps that isn't entirely true as I have an interest in Penny Reds & the fascinating ways of working out plate numbers etc. I have seen people who reconstruct entire plates- how satisfying must that be to find the last one you need. I once had a stamp snake which I found absolutely fascinating too but it was in good condition with the head & tail & I always regretted selling it. I then found another one without the head & with the string in poor condition. I took some of the stamps off from the damaged bit & started sorting through them. You could almost date when the snake was made from the plate numbers. It must have taken many thousands of stamps to make it- sadly they all have a hole in the middle. So back to my stamps, Bert collected mainly Commonwealth but with some from the US. I can clearly remember my mum showing me 2 albums with his collection of the Ascension & Falkland Islands & his beautifully neat handwritten numbers & notes. Sadly these have gone missing & I have the feeling mum gave them to charity, which of course is good as well but I always hoped to have them one day. All was not lost as I found his New Zealand, Australia & Canada collections. Bert had a successful business & although not rich he was comfortable & bought stamps from many dealers. The stamps were valued for probate in 1970 by SG. I won't say what their value was or which Country had several pages which made the valuer stop his rapid page flicking. So given my interest in early Penny Reds I have decided I'd like to continue his collection of New Zealand Chalons. I'm heading over to that section now & it was because of the fantastic article by DK that prompted me to join this forum. I hope to participate as much as I can although my knowledge in this field is very limited. Bien cordialement Rob.

Many thanks everyone for your warm welcome. I was only 7 when my grandfather Robert Stanley Burt died(hence the Bert Burts stamps) but I remember him very well. He had a passion for the River Thames at Leigh on Sea & painted many watercolours of the area. His favourites were the cockle boats common on the Thames at the time & I have 2 scratch built models of them that he made. He was an importer of foie gras, escargot & the like & I have a book listing many of the shipping companies & boats of the time in his beautiful handwriting. He painted the flags of these companies & these are held at The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. Although I don't really remember he clearly loved collecting his stamps too. I'm sure he would be thrilled that I am able to share what he collected with you all.

He had a passion for the River Thames at Leigh on Sea & painted many watercolours of the area. Your Grandfather had a good eye !! I have visited Leigh-on-Sea since my childhood, I was born just down the road ! During my UK holidays I would take my Mum and her sisters for lunch or afternoon tea or just to sit and watch the boats. Such memories. Until Covid there was even a bi-monthly stamp fair in the town. Days gone by. Londonbus1

He moved to Upminster not far away & we used to visit him & my gran on a Sunday once a month via the North circular road(way before the M25) stopping at Nans Pantry if we were lucky. I'm sure in his day he would have belonged to a society or club. Rob.

Good afternoon everyone. I think I've decided how to proceed with Bert's collection. I am just going to leave it exactly as it is unless there are spaces that I can fix my additions to the collection in. I was going to unhinge them & mount them in clear plastic slides(so I could see his annotations underneath) but I prefer to leave them just as they are. I have many unused pages in his album so the idea is to start with the Chalons & collect(or to start to try)the ones missing. I will display them in SG order(easier for me). I mentioned he liked making things earlier & this is a self portrait of himself made from an old chicken wishbone(he was Scottish & from Clan Scrymgeour). When I found it it was badly damaged & I repaired it & matched the colours in pretty well. The photo is of Bert. Best regards Rob.

It arrived & is much bigger than I imagined. It's for 2021 but I really only want it as a reference guide but OMG the prices!!! I guess I will be aiming for average or fine. Next up is to find some tweezers & mounts- can anyone recommend an online supplier? Many thanks as always. Regards Rob.

I popped into Stanley Gibbons today at 399 The Strand. I'm not sure what I was expecting tbh but the staff were very friendly & helpful. I was amazed that the staff I spoke with do not collect stamps & that 95% of their customers were men. They had a "used" section so I bought 4 albums for £5 each, album pages, mounts & a pair of tweezers too. The coin & medal department was closed but I got a 2023 Medal Yearbook for £10. I could also have bought the 2024 Commonwealth catalogue for £47.50 but I resisted as my 2021 had just arrived. There were a lot of medals, coins & stamps for sale. I can only really comment on the coins but they seemed reasonably priced to me. The stamps all looked to be very good examples but that of course was reflected in the price. Worth a visit if you are visiting London & of course I got a bag!
