Friends:
I have a collection of booklet panes. There are two of each example. One is mint and the other is canceled but unused. The cancellation is not on day of issue (or any commemorative date, to my knowledge). Both examples are still neatly bound in their booklets.
What's the point of a later not-first-day cancellation?

Perhaps these were purchased for someone else, and the date held significance (birthday, anniversary, etc.) I have met several collectors who collect their birthdays, or their childrens....

It's also possible the original owner collected unused and used, so the date of the cancellation was of no concern but simply to have a used pane to go with the unused one. This is a way of collecting you see in Europe, Germany in particular, but not so much I think in the U.S. I think one album maker (Lindner maybe?) even makes an album for new/used stamps -- so you gotta get two of everything.
