Who doesn't like a birthday? Well, some of us may not be so crazy about what that birthday means...one year older and sometimes all the fuss people make over us. As for birthdays of persons commemorated on stamps, I thought a thread acknowledging their birthdays might breathe a new appreciation for who they were. Share a stamp image of a person born on the day of your post and if so inspired, a brief personal note of appreciation for who this person was or a quote. Let me get started... Today is Martin Luther's 541'st birthday (November 10, 1483). No, not Martin Luther King Jr. but the first Martin Luther. He was a German priest, theologian, author, hymnwriter, professor and key figure (some would suggest the catalyst) in the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century and a major influencer in all things Western (perhaps that's a bit of an overstatement, but no much). From his public defense of his writings at the Diet of Works on April 19, 1521 (whether he said them quite this way or not) were these: "Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone, since it is well known that they have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. May God help me. Amen."

Well, this thread has not caught fire so I will add the birthday stamp of the day and it is "Happy 870th birthday King Sancho I of Portugal!" Sancho was born November 11, 1154 and became the second king of Portugal (1185-1211). He was nicknamed "the Populator." Initially, I thought it was because he had eleven children with his wife, the Dulce of Aragon, as well as nine other "illegitimate" children. However, his nickname arose from the fact that he sought to build settlements in the northern depopulated area of Portugal. In total, he seemed to be a pretty good king, reinforcing the political and economic stability of Portugal. Portugal issued a stamp in his honor on March 17, 1955 (Scott #805). I don't have this stamp in my collection but here's an image captured from Colnect.

I often look at Wikipedia for its article on a particular day of the year - what happened in history, who was born, who died, what holidays are celebrated. Lots of possibilities for today, Nov. 11, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, George S. Patton, King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, etc, etc. I don't think famous spy Alger Hiss ever got on a stamp, though (famous spy Kim Philby did! Cold War stamping is lots of fun). Waiting for my birthday, April 28, to see if anybody posts a Saddam Hussein stamp ... Ryan

Happy Birthday Sun Yat-sen, 12 November 1866 – 12 March 1925) was a Chinese revolutionary, statesman, and political philosopher who served as the provisional first president of the Republic of China and the first leader of the Kuomintang (KMT). Uniquely among 20th-century Chinese leaders, Sun is revered by both the Republic of China on Taiwan (where he is officially the "Father of the Nation") and by the People's Republic of China (where he is officially the "Forerunner of the Revolution") for his instrumental role in the 1911 Revolution that successfully overthrew the Qing dynasty. I had Dr. Sun Yat-Sen queued up, but a couple of East Coasters were up early this morning. So let's also celebrate the amazing Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci who turns 63 today. She was the star of the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, and was the first gymnast to score perfect 10s in competition. Scoring a perfect 10 back then caused much consternation, not only because there were no provisions to display the score! So the officials displayed 1.00 instead. I was 10 years old at the time and was so enthralled with the Olympics being hosted in my country that I watched almost all of the games live on CBC, including the perfect 10 moment. Thus began a lifetime of watching sports on TV rather than playing sports outside!

Happy Birthday François Auguste René Rodin born 12 November 1840. A French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. He was schooled traditionally and took a craftsman-like approach to his work. Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, and deeply pocketed surface in clay. He is known for such sculptures as The Thinker, Monument to Balzac, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais, and The Gates of Hell. France 1937, Scott numbers B52 and B58 respectively. The surtax was used for relief of unemployed intellectuals. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Rob

madbaker beat me out on this one but I had it prepared so I'll post it as well. Happy Birthday: Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson; born 13 November 1850 died 3 December 1894, was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet and travel writer. He is best known for works such as Treasure Island, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Kidnapped and A Child's Garden of Verses.
Born and educated in Edinburgh, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble for much of his life but continued to write prolifically and travel widely in defiance of his poor health. In 1890, he settled in Samoa where, alarmed at increasing European and American influence in the South Sea islands, his writing turned from romance and adventure fiction toward a darker realism. He died of a stroke in his island home in 1894 at age 44.

Happy Birthday Oscar-Claude Monet, born November 14th 1840, died 5 December 1926. A French painter and founder of impressionism painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. During his long career, he was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of impressionism's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions of nature, especially as applied to plein air (outdoor) landscape painting. The term "impressionism" is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant, which was first exhibited in the so-called "exhibition of rejects" of 1874 – an exhibition initiated by Monet and like-minded artists as an alternative to the Salon.
Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883, Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899, he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life. Happy Birthday Robert Fulton, born November 14th 1765 and died February 24th 1815. An American engineer and inventor widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat. His innovations in naval transportation significantly transformed travel and trade in the 19th century.
Fulton's interest in engineering was evident from an early age, leading him to pursue a career that combined his artistic skills with his fascination for machines. His work was deeply influenced by the likes of James Watt, the Scottish inventor whose improvements to the steam engine played a pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution. Fulton's work was an extension of these innovations, applying the principles of steam power to naval transportation.
His breakthrough came after years of experimenting with steam engines and ship designs. In 1807, Fulton successfully launched the "Clermont," a steamboat that traveled from New York City to Albany, proving that steam could be a practical source of power for water navigation.
The success of the "Clermont" led to the rapid expansion of steamboat services along the Hudson River and other major waterways. Fulton's innovation revolutionized transportation, making it faster, more reliable, and more efficient. This, in turn, had significant economic implications, facilitating trade and contributing to the growth of cities along these routes.
In addition to his work on steamboats, Fulton also made contributions in the field of naval warfare. He designed the "Nautilus," one of the first practical muscle-powered submarines, and worked on plans for underwater explosives. Edited from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
United States, 1909 Hudson – Fulton commemorative issue. Released, September 25th 1909, Scott number 372.
In 1609, Henry Hudson discovered the Hudson River in his sailing vessel, the ‘Half Moon’. About 200 years later, in 1807, Robert Fulton proved his steamboat theory by sailing over the same stretch of water in his creation, the “Clermont”. A hundred years later, plans were in progress for a celebration to be held in New York in 1909 to commemorate the tercentenary of the discovery by Hudson but finally became a joint celebration covering both events.

Happy Birthday Georgia Totto O'Keeffe. Born on November 15th 1887 and died on March 6, 1986. She was an American modernist painter and draftswoman whose career spanned seven decades and whose work remained largely independent of major art movements. Called the "Mother of American modernism", O'Keeffe gained international recognition for her meticulous paintings of natural forms, particularly flowers and desert-inspired landscapes, which were often drawn from and related to places and environments in which she lived.
From 1905, when O'Keeffe began her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, until about 1920, she studied art or earned money as a commercial illustrator or a teacher to pay for further education. Influenced by Arthur Wesley Dow, O'Keeffe began to develop her unique style beginning with her watercolors from her studies at the University of Virginia and more dramatically in the charcoal drawings that she produced in 1915 that led to total abstraction. Alfred Stieglitz, an art dealer and photographer, held an exhibit of her works in 1917. She moved to New York in 1918 at Stieglitz's request and began working seriously as an artist. They developed a professional and personal relationship that led to their marriage on December 11, 1924. O'Keeffe created many forms of abstract art, including close-ups of flowers, such as the Red Canna paintings, that many found to represent vulvas, though O'Keeffe consistently denied that intention. The imputation of the depiction of women's sexuality was also fueled by explicit and sensuous photographs of O'Keeffe that Stieglitz had taken and exhibited. Happy Birthday Frederick William Herschel ! He was born on November 15th 1738 and died on August 25th 1822. He was a German - British astronomer and composer. Starting in 1774, Herschel spent nine years carrying out thorough sky surveys. In 1781, he realized that one celestial body he had observed was not a star, but a planet, Uranus. This was the first planet to be discovered since antiquity. As a result of this discovery, George III appointed him "Court Astronomer". Later he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Roque Gonzales, a Paraguayan Jesuit missionary, was born in Asunción, Governorate of New Andalusia on November 17, 1576 (a Spanish territory encompassing Venezuela, Colombia, parts of Central America, as well as many Caribbean islands). In 1598, at the age of 23, González was ordained a priest and in 1609 became a member of the Society of Jesus, beginning his work as a missionary in what is now Brazil. González' arrival happened only after his developing delicate relationships of trust with local indigenous leaders, some of whom feared that the priests were preparing the way for the arrival of masses of Spanish colonists in their land. Despite this, on November 15, 1628, while preparing to oversee the installation of a new bell for the church at the Mission of Todos los Santos de Caaró, González was struck down and killed with a tomahawk. González was beatified by Pope Pius XI on January 28, 1934 and named the patron saint of the cities of Posadas, Argentina, and Encarnación, Paraguay. The following stamp was issued by Paraguay (Scott # 2412) on October 9, 1992 commemorating the 500th anniversary of evangelism in Paraguay.
