Happy Birthday Louis-Jacques Daguerre!
Louis-Jacques Daguerre was a French artist and photographer, recognized primarily for his significant contributions to the field of photography. He is most famously known for developing the daguerreotype process of photography, which became the first commercially successful photographic process in the mid-19th century. Before his adventures in photography, Daguerre was a skilled decorator and creator of theater sets, and was a pioneer in diorama presentation. His fascination with light effects on painted surfaces eventually led him towards experiments with light-sensitive chemicals, and the quest for a process to capture images permanently.
In the 1820s, Daguerre formed a partnership with Nicéphore Niépce, another pioneering French inventor, who had been working on early photographic processes. Following Niépce's death in 1833, Daguerre continued their experiments, ultimately developing a process that involved exposing a silver-plated sheet of copper, treated with iodine vapor, to create a light-sensitive surface. The resulting image, known as a daguerreotype, was made visible by exposing it to mercury vapor and then set by dipping in a salt solution. This process, announced to the world in 1839 and named after its inventor, was a major milestone in the development of photography. Daguerre's work laid the foundation for the photographic processes that would continue to evolve throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
France, 1939 Yvert & Tellier number 42, commemorative postage stamp with portraits of Niépce and Daguerre; Centenaire de la photographie.

Happy Birthday Sojourner Truth! Born November 18, 1797, died November 26, 1883. She was a prominent abolitionist and women's rights activist in the 19th century. Born into slavery, she gained her freedom and became a powerful speaker against slavery and in support of women's rights, leaving a significant impact on these reform movements. Her birth name was Isabella Baumfree. She was born enslaved in New York. She escaped to freedom with her infant daughter in 1826, and later successfully sued for the freedom of her son, becoming one of the first black women to win such a case against a white man.
In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and embarked on a journey to "speak the truth" about the evils of slavery and the necessity of equal rights for all. She is best known for her speech, often titled "Ain't I a Woman," delivered at the Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, in 1851. In addition to her advocacy for abolition and women's rights, Truth also championed prison reform and property rights for former slaves. Her tireless work earned her an invitation to the White House by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864.

Happy Birthday Indira Gandhi ! Born November 19th 1917, Died: October 31, 1984.
She was the first and only female Prime Minister of India. She first served from 1966 to 1977, and then again from 1980 until she was killed in 1984.
Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister and she grew up around politics which shaped her goals from a young age.
At first, Gandhi was thought to be a "puppet" of the Congress party leaders. Soon enough, however, she became a strong leader in her own right and took control of her power. Her policies would ultimately split the party.
Gandhi's biggest achievement was leading India to win the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War which made India the main power in South Asia.
In 1975, Gandhi declared a State of Emergency, thereby restricting personal freedoms and controlling the press. While she was criticized for this, it ultimately allowed her to implement socialist policies and programs for the benefit of poor people.
Gandhi was a strong supporter of India's nuclear program. She also dealt with the Punjab crisis and Operation Blue Star.
She was killed by two of her Sikh bodyguards in 1984, which then led to riots against Sikhs across India.
Even though she was controversial, Gandhi is still an important figure in Indian history and is remembered as the "Iron Lady" of India. Rob

Happy Birthday George Rogers Clark Born November 19th 1752, Died February 13th 1818.
He was an American military officer and surveyor from Virginia who became the highest-ranking Patriot military officer on the northwestern frontier during the Revolutionary War. He served as leader of the Virginia militia in Kentucky (then part of Virginia) throughout much of the war. He is best known for his captures of Kaskaskia in 1778 and Vincennes in 1779 during the Illinois campaign, which greatly weakened British influence in the Northwest Territory (then part of the British Province of Quebec) and earned Clark the nickname of "Conqueror of the Old Northwest". The British ceded the entire Northwest Territory to the United States in the 1783 Treaty of Paris. George's younger brother was William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame. Rob

Happy Birthday August René Caillié !
He was born 19th November 1799, Died 17th May 1838. He was a French explorer and the first European to return alive from the town of Timbuktu. Caillié had been preceded at Timbuktu by a British officer, Major Gordon Laing, who was murdered in September 1826 on leaving the city.[3] Caillié was therefore the first to return alive. Caillié was born in western France in a village near the port of Rochefort. His parents were poor and died while he was still young. At the age of 16 he left home and signed up as a member of the crew on a French naval vessel sailing to Saint-Louis on the coast of modern Senegal in western Africa. He stayed there for several months and then crossed the Atlantic to Guadeloupe on a merchantman. He made a second visit to West Africa two years later when he accompanied a British expedition across the Ferlo Desert to Bakel on the Senegal River. Rob
Dahomey 1939, Scott numbers 108 - 110. Common design type also used in: French Guinea, French Sudan, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo.France 1999 - Anniversary of the Birth of René Caillié, Scott number 2731

Happy Birthday Edwin Powell Hubble Born: November 20th, 1889 He proved the existence of galaxies beyond the Milky Way and discovered evidence for an expanding universe. Hubble also developed a system for classifying galaxies, which is still used today.
He initially pursued a career in law at his father's request, earning degrees from both the University of Chicago and Oxford University. After his father's death in 1913, Hubble returned to his passion for astronomy, completing his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory in 1921.
In 1919, Hubble joined the staff at the Mount Wilson Observatory, where he would spend the rest of his career. Using the 100-inch Hooker Telescope, he identified Cepheid variables in several nebulae in 1924, proving there were separate galaxies outside the Milky Way. This discovery expanded our understanding of the universe's size and structure.
Hubble developed a system for classifying galaxies based on their appearance, known as the Hubble Sequence. In 1929, he discovered the relationship between a galaxy's distance and its recession velocity, later known as Hubble's Law. This provided evidence for an expanding universe, a concept that would revolutionize cosmology.
During World War II, Hubble worked as a civilian for the U.S. Army, improving the design and performance of bombs and rockets. For his contributions, he received the Legion of Merit award. After the war, Hubble spent much of his later career campaigning to have astronomy recognized as part of physics, hoping to make astronomers eligible for the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Hubble died of cerebral thrombosis on September 28, 1953, in San Marino, California. His legacy lives on through the Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990 and named in his honor. Rob

Happy birthday Friedrich Schleiermacher, born November 21, 1768. He was a German Reformed theologian, know for his attempts to blend Enlightenment insights with traditional Protestant Christianity. He was a key figure in developing what is known as "higher critical" approaches to biblical study which also made him the father of modern liberal theology (not my personal cup of tea). The German Federal Republic issued a stamp commemorating his 250th birthday on November 2, 2018 (Scott#3066, SG #4219). The stamp has a quote in German which is roughly translated as: "There is something good and worthy to do in every moment." I'm open to correction.

Happy Birthday Charles de Gaulle Born November 22nd, 1890, Died November 9, 1970.
He led the Free French Forces during World War II and later served as President of France. He is known for his efforts to maintain the independence and global influence of France.
De Gaulle began his career in the French Army before World War I. He was captured by German forces during the war and spent time as a prisoner. Between the wars, de Gaulle developed new ideas about mobile armored warfare, but these were not widely accepted by French military leaders.
When France fell to Nazi Germany in 1940, de Gaulle escaped to England. He made a radio broadcast on June 18, calling for French resistance against the German occupation. This speech became known as the "Appeal of 18 June." De Gaulle led the Free French Forces throughout World War II, often disagreeing with Allied leaders Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
After the war, de Gaulle briefly led the French government but resigned in 1946. He returned to power in 1958 during a political crisis. De Gaulle established a new system of government called the Fifth Republic and became its first president.
As president, de Gaulle pursued policies to strengthen France's position in the world. He developed France's nuclear weapons program and withdrew the country from NATO's military command. De Gaulle also blocked the United Kingdom's entry into the European Economic Community, which later became the European Union.
In 1968, de Gaulle faced major protests by students and workers. He briefly left France during this crisis but returned to restore order. De Gaulle resigned in 1969 after losing a referendum on government reforms. He died the following year at his home in eastern France Rob

Happy Birthday George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) Born November 22nd, 1819, Died December 22nd, 1880.
Mary Ann Evans is known more by her pseudonym George Eliot, a name she took up in the 1850s when she started to publish works of fiction.
Her first novel "Adam Bede" (1859) was immediately successful. Other works followed such as "Mill on the Floss" (1860) and her masterpiece "Middlemarch" (1871-2) now regarded as one of the most important nineteenth century novels, all written with Eliot's characteristic realistic style.
Eliot's personal life was scandalous, from 1854 to 1878, she lived openly with the married journalist George Henry Lewes, whose wife was already involved with another man. Upon Lewes' death she married a Scottish banker 20 years her junior. Rob
