Sent from Morlaix, France, July 22, 1840 Back stamped July 24, 1840, at ?? Arrived July 25, 1840, at Bayeux Sadly, there was no enclosure, and I am having a hard time reading the script. It’s quite possible that it’s addressed to "Monsieur Le Maire de Bayeux," which more or less translates to "Mayor of Bayeux." I can’t make out the parenthetical notation. At some point, I’ll have to look into whether or not there would have even been a "Mayor" of Bayeux in 1840.

Zuzu, the bottom in brackets says "Calvados" which is a department in Normandy province.
You are correct with the rest of your translation. A lovely cover.

Thanks, Zipper! Thank you, BC! I'm glad those four years of French twenty*cough* years ago haven't gone completely wasted.

Be careful Zuzu, stampless folded letters can be addictive!

Congrats and looks like a nice one! Check out Jim Forte's postal history website for stuff like this too. I used to have great sites to pick these up for cheap but sadly I lost all my links during the recent comp crash.

Jeff, I've been to Jim Forte's site a few times, but I'm afraid to go there too often! I have to keep my spending habits in check. (I did discover his cheap covers site, too, but there's just so much STUFF that I haven't had a chance to really get around in there!) This one was from our old ebay friend.

I believe your July 24th backstamp reads "Caen".

Caen was a WWI AND a WWII ("A bridge too far") battlefield and is really just a small town in France. Neat stuff!
