Ghana on Steiner PagesApologies for wonky stamps, possibly when removing from covers, and scanning reveals a multitude of sins. A nice easy, budget collecting country, most mint stamps are a few pennies.

I would like to publicly thank James, our illustrious TSF poster, he sent me some lovely US precancels which I shall show later, but also some MINT Ghana, which helped me nearly complete 2 more pages. Thanks James. Your stamps:

Ghana: Mutilated Stationery piece. Pre printed embossed envelope Registration Fee 13.5 Pesewas. The Ghana cedi is the unit of currency of Ghana. The word cedi is derived from the Akan word for cowry shell (cowry shells were once used in Ghana as a form of currency). One Ghana cedi is divided into one hundred Ghana pesewas (Gp). A number of Ghanaian coins have also been issued in "sika" denominations. These are probably best considered as "medallic" coinage, and may have no legal tender status. The word sika means "money".

Ghana Postmarks Note: First stamp is a Bridge type CDS, old style, still with "GOLD COAST" script, the second is the poorer DUNKWA GHANA.

Rodney, I've never been able to get my hands on any of the Africa volumes for Michael, unfortunately. Cheers Dave, Michel is European centric, and it seems only hardcore collectors have them in my neck of the woods. Also expensive to mail here. I am not located near any stamp clubs, so the route to pick them up is diminished. Thanks for responding.

But whenever I happen to stumble upon a relatively recent volume at a relatively decent price, I try to scoop it up. These missing Africa volumes may have dropped off my radar, so I'll start keeping an eye out for them again. Does anyone know if SG might list them, since Ghana was in the Empire at one time? (right?) -- Dave

Would any members with Michel, advise if imperforate stamps of Ghana are listed, please? I have a 2009 West Africa SG catalogue - imperf stamps which were normally issued perforate are listed following the main section but not priced. My Michel West Africa is getting a bit old (2001/02 edition) but back then it did list some imperforate issues. The 1967 castles set you show imperforate is given the same mint price and is unpriced used. The 1984 Christmas series is not listed imperforate, however (it is included in the unpriced listing in the SG catalogue). Ryan

Thank you very much, Ryan. As I suspected, nice to have it confirmed. I have quite a few, and suspected released as revenue earners. Cheers.

I just wanted to mention that I'm reasonably certain that, despite the "new" designation and a nice-looking label, this is a bootleg product -- and not just a copy made of existing dvds produced by Michel, but rather a compilation of files (pdfs and/or jpgs) of scans that somebody made of the paper catalogs.

Things can get a bit chaotic when it's time to make the change from driving on one side of the road to the other - here's what it looked like in Stockholm, Sweden on the day they switched (image from Wikipedia's article on the day of the switch). And they put lines on the roads there - imagine what it looked like in Ghana! Ryan

Ghana (formerly Gold Coast) First Issues after Independence, 1957Ghana, Sc 1-4, depicting Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah, Map of Africa showing Ghana's Location, and a Palm-Nut Vulture, complete set of 4 Ghana, Sc 28-31, which are Sc 1-4 overprinted to commemorate the Prime Minister's Visit to the US and Canada in 1958, complete set of 4 As a note on provenance, I got these stamps from Gavin ( feebletodix), as part of a lot of British Colonial African country issues on album pages. Thanks, Gavin, it's a nice lot! As these stamps lie outside my collecting era of interest, I am planning to put together a lot from Ghana which I will offer for sale at some point in the future.
