In 1919 the French territory of Upper Volta was detached from the southern section of Upper Senegal and Niger and made a separate colony. In 1933 the colony was divided among its neighbors. The Republic of Upper Volta was proclaimed December 11, 1958; the name was changed to Burkina Faso on August 4, 1984.

The former French colony of Middle Congo became a member state of the French Community on November 28, 1958 and achieved independence on August 15, 1960. For some years before 1958, the colony was joined with three other French territories to form French Equatorial Africa.

French West Africa comprised the colonies of Senegal, French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Dahomey, French Sudan, Mauritania, Niger and Upper Volta. In 1958 these colonies became republics, eventually issuing their own stamps.Until the republic issues appeared, stamps of French West Africa continued in use. The Senegal and Sudanese Republics issued stamps jointly as the Federation of Mali, starting in 1959.

This territory was purchased by Britain in 1861 and placed under the Governor of Sierra Leone. It was detached in 1874 and formed part of the Gold Coast Colony until 1886 when the Protectorate of Lagos was established. Chartered to the Royal Niger Company until 1899 when all territories of that company were surrendered to the Crown and formed into Northern and Southern Nigeria Protectorates. In 1906, Lagos and Southern Nigeria were united to form the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria.

Obock was the point of entrance from which French Somaliland was formed. The port was acquired by the French in 1862 but was not actively occupied until 1884. In 1888 Djibouti was made into a port and the seat of government moved there from Obock. In 1902 the name Somali Coast was adopted on the postage stamps of Djibouti and these stamps superseded the individual issues of Obock.

Administered by the British South Africa Company. In 1923 the area was divided and the portion south of the Zambezi River became the British Crown Colony of Southern Rhodesia. In the following year the remaining territory was formed into the Protectorate of Northern Rhodesia. The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (comprising Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland) was established September 3, 1953.

Prior to 1923 the area was administered by the British South Africa Company. The colony was created in 1923 by the British Government. In 1953, Southern Rhodesia joined Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland to form the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. When the Federation dissolved at the end of 1963, Southern Rhodesia again became an internally self-governing colony.

Group of Islands off the coast of Taganyika. Before 1895, unoverprinted stamps of India were used in Zanzibar. Zanzibar was a British protectorate until December 10, 1963, when it became independent. A republic was established after a revolt in January 1964. Zanzibar joined Tanganyika April 26, 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar which was later renamed Tanzania (see Tanzania).
