Recently I had picked up a small lot of the U.S. "small banknotes" or Bureau issues. After sorting them, I tried to put them in where they belonged and to my horror I started to notice that things was quickly going awry...I had originally identified these years ago when I just starting out and had them grossly mis-identified. So one-by-one I started pulling them and watermarking them and very tediously and correctly identifying them.. I actually had to do them all just to be absolutely positive that they was correct! Well, now I'm mostly done other than the few I had to float hinges off of.. but it looks like I have to start looking for quite a few to fill some rather large gaps! UGH!!
On the other hand however, I'm sort of glad about it. Now I know exactly what I have and what I need. I can now begin to upgrade and replace and overhaul that whole section that has bugged me for months now! So back to the drawing board...lol I'll put up a before and after scan as soon as I get the ones out of my drying book later on today if you want to see the devastation...lol

I feel your consternation. I was not always so careful the earlier years, and, combined with less experience then, means checking watermarks for a series results in reshuffling stamps. Even more so, if one is breaking down a received collection, all the watermarks will have to be checked, as there are usually plenty of errors.

I know all mine are 100% now. I was on a buying binge back then and pretty much took the word of what was written on the pages...what a mistake that was!! I almost have none of the un-watermarked in any sort of good condition and ...pretty much a huge headache!

I'm actually not that bad off now that put it away for the day and looked at it with "fresh eyes". I have most of the shades and just need the higher values but really need to upgrade some of my other ones though. Here is a scan I just done at 300dpi. [ The little white tags read: No WMK, DL WMK (Double Line), U.P.U. (Universal Postal Union).]

With respect, whilst it's nice to know what you are doing, others like myself, scratch my head. A brief description of what is involved may assist others in identification, if they approach them. Why waste a good post?

Oooh...maybe but I got to work up the moxy to put something like that together. At least for the 2¢ and all the varying types and shades. The subject can get quite involved! Great idea I'll start work on it today Rod. Thank you Rod!

We don't need chapter and verse, (unless you want to but what, perhaps, the newbie as myself, is faced with when approaching this discipline, and how you approach it. With my Romanian, the "Spic de Grau" or "Ears of wheat" involves a HUGE depth of investigation, the first approach is to discriminate using firstly watermarks, then paper structure. Perhaps something like that.
