No secret I've been researching Canadian War Tax stamps of the First World War. My curiosity is carrying me farther afield, and I'm starting to look internationally as well, and at other wars. A quiet day at work today allowed me to do a little on line research, and I found something surprising (to me anyway, some of you may know this). The United States actually issued a war tax stamp, though it wasn't labeled as such. A penny of the 3¢ 1919 Victory stamp went to pay for the war debt. In an article in Linn's, Janet Klug explains, "In the United States, from Nov. 2, 1917, to June 30, 1919, the rate for a first-class letter weighing up to 1 ounce was raised from 2¢ to 3¢. Of this amount, 2¢ went for postage and 1¢ paid the war tax. The 3¢ violet Victory and Flags of the Allies stamp, U.S. Scott 537... was issued to pay this rate." Who knew? I believe the Battleship documentary and proprietary stamps, which picture the battleship Maine, were also issued in 1897 to help finance the Spanish American War, but those were revenues. Here's a case of a postage stamp helping to foot the bill. Here's a link to the article. www.linns.com/howto/refresher/wartaxstamps_20030707/refreshercourse.aspxLadies and Gentlemen, I give you Victory!

Lest we not forget that the Washington-Franklins did the heavy lifting in the war emergency role prior to the arrival of the Victory issue.

While the article is interesting I would like to know why the Scott catalog decided to use initials MR for war tax why not WT??? Would that have not made more sense???

I can buy that, then there's the F for postage dues. Why not PD?? Just doesn't make "common" sense, yet we collectors use Scott as a common knowledge tool.
