Wow! That is fabulous. Thanks Jaysee Super. I recall on another forum, we did a thematic on The Statue of Liberty, I still have oodlies of scans for these but not this one, I had given up. Liberty's visage on this one is not convincing, she looks like a lass around 14 yo. The SPECIMEN noted in the article Other Material

1893 is known for the Columbian Issue H. H. Holmes - look up The Columbian World Exposition The fair ended with the city in shock, as popular mayor Carter Harrison, Sr. was assassinated by Patrick Eugene Prendergast two days before the fair's closing. Closing ceremonies were canceled in favor of a public memorial service. A new national holiday – Columbus Day – was one result of the fair’s popularity. Here are a few items pertaining to the exposition Postcard Tickets & Admissions This I believe was for "Poor Children's Day", July 16th 1893, where 10,000 were admitted free On October 9, 1893, the day designated as Chicago Day, the fair set a world record for outdoor event attendance, drawing 751,026 people. With such great attendance, the debt for the fair was paid off.

These photos are making me want to get working on my ephemera stuff. I have a series of letters swapped between a father and his enlisted son during WWII. The father was stuck in California and couldn't get the gas he needed to get to the east coast to see his son off. I only opened a couple of the letters because they're moldy and I'm allergic to mold. The rest have been in a box with drier sheets (not touching the actual paper) and baking soda to try to remove some of the stench. I'll have to get back to them and check the rest of the letters out!

Are letters considered ephemera? The Ephemera Society of America provides a very broad definition of ephemera on its site and among the pictures it displays are a number of letters. Your WWII father/son letters seem to fit the bill but, rather than appending them to an existing thread, they might better be displayed in a thread of their own.

An uncirculated $5 obsolete bank note from the remainders of the State Bank at New Brunswick, New Jersey. It was printed in the 1850s by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson and bears the two engraved portraits of Washington and Franklin used on the first two US stamps.

I have no idea where to post this ... so I've posted it here. Feel free to move it! ... I picked this up for a dollar this week at my local club meeting. I can just imagine US troopers arriving in Hawaii in 1942 and, for the stamp collectors among them, seeing this on offer -- War Zone Stamps. It was produced by C(yrus) W(illiams) Best -- a cachet maker and stamp dealer in Honolulu. Some of his early (1920s) cachets show up on auction from time to time. Based on the date of issue for the stamps, it must have been produced in 1942 or later (which, of course, makes sense - smile). Stamps: New Celedonia Bird and Cross of Lorraine 5c Brown Issued: 1942 to note the colony's declaration for the Free French Sc. 242 British Solomon Islands Pikeman and Cheif 1p Dark Purple and Chocolate Issued: 1939 Sc. 68 Australia Nurse, Sailor, Soldier and Aviator 1d Green Issued: July 15, 1940 Sc. 184 Gilbert and Ellice Islands Canoe Crossing 1.5d Carmine and Black Issued: Jan 14, 1939 Sc. 42 Pitcairn Islands Cluster of Oranages ½d Blue-Green and Oranage Issued: 1940 Sc. 1 New Zealand Landing of the Maoris in 1350 ½p Dark Green and Black Issued: January 2, 1940 Sc. 229 Western Samoa (Under NZ Mandate) View of Apia 1p Carmine Lake and Black Issued: August 7, 1935 Sc. 167

Pictured below is a ticket to the first Oklahoma Philatelic Society (OPS) banquet in Oklahoma City in 1933. It includes an example of the OPS's first cinderella poster stamp affixed on the left side of the ticket. I'm don't know if the ticket is used or unused. Originally, I thought that someone had pasted the cinderella on the ticket as an afterthought, but since the printing is so evenly offset to the right I now think that space was intentionally left for the cinderella and one was pasted to all of the tickets. I was surprised to find this ticket and add it to my collection. It is the first I have seen. Don StampHinger
