djcmh , I am leaving for vacation for 10 days at the end of this week. Is there an away message or out of office message feature in Colnect? Should I be using the pause all listings feature in this case until I get back? With marketplace issues I really can not help. Best to post a thread in the marketplace threat at Colnect for advice

I have been using Colnect to help identify my non US stamps since I found out about it from this forum, as there are images of most of the stamps for each country, unlike the Scott catalogs. About a month ago it switched from displaying 250 stamps a page to only 10, what a pain! I looked all over for a setting for the number of stamps to display per page, no luck. I tried going back to the catalogs but Colnect is still more help even with the fewer stamps per page.
I just noticed that I had been logged out. I logged back in and presto, 250 stamps per page again! Duh, what an idiot... I could use the 'I am getting old' excuse (I am getting old) but most of my life has dealt with computers and online security (not my lively hood, just another hobby) so I should have realized this.
Geez...

The drop down switch for the display to show # stamps per page is in upper left corner of the thumbnail page display you can display anywhere from 10 to 250 images per page (I usually use 100 myself).

some updates on what's going on at Colnect
1) the reorganization of Cinderella/Revene/Personalized Stamps from large group sections to individual country subgroups is complete. Now if you want to look at Dutch Cinderellas, go to the Netherlands : Cinderella Stamps subgroup within Netherlands listings. This will allow better indexing of these issue into groups/sets and so forth. A major improvement in how the catalogue is organized, in my opinion.
2) the changeover from special variants to minor variants is about 60% complete - the editors keep plugging away at it but as it needs to be done by hand to ensure the variants end up under the right main stamp, it's a rather long process. Hopefully done with this by early next year, maybe sooner if I can work on it while on medical leave from work while me knee surgery on 16 October heals. Again once finished, this will make the organization of the catalogue much more streamlined so that those who only want to see the basic listings will have just those visible, and those into collecting variants having everything together under one listing (or fully displayed as separate listings - as each user can set how the minor variants are displayed in their search results by changing the setting in their User Account settings).
3) Parallel listings for Israel tab and non-Tab stamps are now complete up to 2008, and my goal this week while i am on staycation from work is to get this completed if at all possible.
As always looking for volunteers willing to contribute missing material to the Colnect catalogue - ESPECIALLY revenues and cinderellas, where we are still at the tip of the iceberg in terms of content. As a Wiki, Colnect only grows due to the contributions of material by volunteers to the database, and Colnect really represents a golden opportunity for the communities of revenue and cinderella collectors to help create a central worldwide reference for this material for future generations.

To add to djcmh’s Colnect update - the first 1,000 Irish commemoratives now have Hibernian numbers, too. Slowly but surely getting there. I recently won a fairly extensive collection of international and Stampa show overprints so once I finish the primary numbers I’ll add listings for these exhibition souvenirs. I’ve also been discussing listing minor variants with other collectors. djcmh can correct me if I’m wrong, but if a variant is listed with a unique number in a catalog approved by Colnect then it is fair game to be listed as a minor variant. If I can get good pics of these then I’ll try to add them. I’ll probably post a notice in the Eire Philatelic Association journal, The Revealer, to find pics of some of the more scarce varieties. So if you’re not using Colnect - check it out!

I am currently working on my collection of Faroese stamps and am also preparing album pages for them. I thought that using Colnect would make this easier, as it would save me having to measure the sizes of the stamps, among other things.
Unfortunately, I was at least partly wrong: some of the sizes given on Colnect are not correct.
I then used the stamp search site of the UPU as another source. A big surprise for me: the errors on Colnect and the UPU site were (almost) identical!
You can probably only recognize such errors if you have real access to the stamps in question and experience with them. This was probably not the case here, or else the trust in the correctness of the UPU information was/is unlimited.
So I guess I'll have to continue measuring the sizes of the stamps, at least of the Faroe Islands, myself...
With these remarks I do not want to question the extensive work that many volunteers do for Conect and thus for us stamp collectors! On the contrary: I thank them very much!!!

Stamp sizes are the hardest because unless you trust your sources - like the UPU in this case - you have to measure them yourself. One would *think* the UPU would have accurate data (which is likely coming from Posta Foroyar) but even Post Offices themselves will give you size information that is sometmes incorrect - to the point that some administrations I do not trust their size or perforation data when they provide for new issues it because revisions have had to be made when collectors have the stamps in front of them, In the end Colnect is a wiki, and the data is as good as the source of the data. We do our best to be accurate, but errors come in (as they do with published paper catalogues).

rednaxela if you do find errors on the sizes, please do consider using the "Improve our Catalogue" dialogue box on each stamp's main page so that we can correct the data.

I'm not only considering it, I'm doing it - and not just since today... My main point is that even on the UPU site there are some errors that, if you are not aware of them, are very easily "inherited" into other databases that are important for stamp collectors - such as Colnect.

A little update on Colnect now that we are in the New Year
The shiftover from the old special variant system to the new minor variant system is about 80% complete. When we started there were over 50K items to move, we are now down to just a bit over 12K.
There will probably not be any more major organizational/structural changes coming to the stamps catalgoue - after about 5 year I think we now have the catalogue in a position where it is fairly easy to navigate and allows for items like cinderellas and revenues to be properly listed while not clogging up the main postage stamp listings. This means more time can be spent on filling the gaps in terms of content, especially from specialized catalogues going forward.
If you have any suggestions on how to improve the catalogue's functionality, please don't hesitate to post them here or PM me here or over at Colnect.

The more I get used to Colnect the more I like it.
I find the set / theme listings especially helpful to identify all the stamps that 'go together.' I fear my paper catalogues will be staying in the box more and more now.
I got to experience what you say about Cinderellas last night. I was stumbling around Indonesia and Malaysia, pondering Maluku Selatan, etc. etc and the Cinderella listings helped me out quite a bit. Simply grouping the Cinderellas together and labelling them as such helped immensely!
My latest struggle with all catalogues, print or online, is not so much the individual listings, but figuring out which major section might contain my mystery stamp.
- If the stamp isn't listed under the main Indonesia listing, in which of the sub sections will the stamp be hiding?
- Which of the myriad of islands Japan occupied in WWII might this little gem be from?
- Which late 1940's Chinese province is described in this overprint, so I can find the correct catalogue section?
I'm seeking out every 'here is how I hunt' or 'here is how I find my way into the catalogue' video and article I can find to get better at this. But that is also part of the fun of the hobby - once I find it, I want to know more about why this sub-section exists. I learn a lot about the world this way.

It gets to a point where you need to know enough of something to find something especially countries that have diverse issues.,. For example, I was going through Germany and had no prior knowledge,.
My primary method to search is by denomination. Colnect has 10 groups under Germany and as I see it you can only search at one of these 10 levels if they do not have sub-group. Some of these have lower levels (occupation, states). If you have an occupation stamp (may not be obvious like the Trizone issues) unless you look in one of the occupation groups, you could not find it by my method. I had this issue and still do not remember how I finally found it under the Trizone.
I use Scott so when trying to match the catalog it can be confusing due to different methods. Colnect does at least give a hint where to find it by prefix. Scott puts the Trizone in main Germany listing unlike Michel and Yvert, In the end, Colnect saved me many hours.

Yes. When the categories were originally set up back long before I even joined Colnect, the decision was to put Maximaphily under postcards. Why that was done I do not know, but was before the Philatelic Products was created as a spinoff from stamps (due to catalogue bloat from First Day Covers at a time when there was no subcategory system of organization in stamps). I guess those in charge at the start in Colnect felt maximum cards fit better in postcards rather than stamps, but have no idea regarding how the decision was made. But Maximum Cards do have a home on Colnect.

Can someone explain how Colnect organizes India? It is not clear where the first issues (East India Company) are located. When you first open the Colnect stamp catalogue for India, you are given a year list that looks like this - you'll notice I have highlighted the "Stamps" link because that's what I choose to make it look a bit more like a Scott (or Michel or SG or whatever) catalogue. After clicking the "Stamps" link, I like to order things by catalogue number. Notice the highlighted "Sort:" drop box. There are a number of choices - pick the one that suits you best, but in this case I have chosen the "Sn code", which is the equivalent to the Scott catalogue number. The list of all stamps is then sorted alphanumerically according to the catalogue number, so all the air post stamps & official stamps and other back-of-the-book issues with a letter prefix are sorted after everything beginning with a digit. Any listing without the Sn code gets appended at the end. Note that in some cases (like some fiscal stamps) this is because there is no Scott catalogue number for them, but in other cases it's just because nobody has entered the code into the Colnect database yet. For example, 2017 has 418 stamps with a Michel catalogue number entered, 243 stamps with the Gibbons number, but only 79 stamps (so far) with the Sn code entered. You can see a highlight on the "Series:" data entry - that's a clickable link, you'll get all the stamps listed under that series if you click on it. Again, that list might be incomplete due to that data item not being entered for all of the stamps - if you find a stamp that hasn't been tagged with the correct series, you can send that info to Colnect and Gene (or whoever) can fix it. Same thing with missing catalogue numbers - if you see a problem, help to fix it. For people who aren't signed up with Colnect, your usefulness of the site drops a lot. First off, you get endless nag screens that you have to click away from. Also, you're limited to displaying only 10 stamps per page. That takes an awful long time to work your way through listings for a country like India with 5,684 stamps listed ... Ryan

I was trying to figure which section included East India. What I have noticed is the view does not work like Germany. For Germany, you cannot click on Germany and see all stamps, You have to pick a section (realm, FDR, occupation, etc). For India, it appears you can select India and see the general issues and sections for additional. If you click Germany the first time you get this which is not helpful. If you go back and click again, it will display the sections. I have no idea what Colnect is telling me I am doing something wrong.

But if I click on "Germany" in the overview of all available collection areas/countries, a list opens with all the different German collection areas.

In general the country setups are roughly based on Michel as that was the catalogue used both most of the early contributors to Colnect in the early 2010s. So Germany is split this way following Michel conventions, and is thus very much exception to the rule since most countries are not split by historical era (hence all India together). China and Russia are thus treated the same with splits based on eras that catalogues like Gibbons and Scott treat differently.
Germany is the oddest because the original creators of Colnect did not create a base Germany. For them pre-1945 Germany and modern Federal Republic are two distinct postal administations. So "Germany" is just the broader concept of "the German region" that has all the various subgroups since when Colnect was first created for stamps, the initial creators felt there should be two separate listings pre and pos 1945. To Anglophone-catalogue based users used to a single Germany that goes Reich-Allied Occupation-Federal Republic this is counterintuitive but suggestions to create a single Germany listing starting Reich to Federal Republic have been opposed by Colnect users in the past who prefer the split. And so Germany is the way it is, since once the sub grouping concept for organization was created in 2020, there was no single Germany postal administration, so Germany is a "hollow" listing for organization purposes only.
To this day the majority of users of Colnect remain continental European for whom Michel is the main catalogue of reference, and really only in past few years have Anglophone users based on Scott and Gibbons become a significant community, and the difference worldviews in how things are organized sometimes creates issues. But in the end the base of Colnect is Michel's organization and how early Colnect users interpreted that organizalong which has its own oddness, especially for non-Michel based collectors. One of the pitfalls of trying to create a universal catalogue is that its base will resemble most closely that of those who began the creation process.
Hence for example the split between British South Africa Company and Rhodesia, which are split in Michel but one single country in Scott and Gibbons (Rhodesia). Here the decision to keep them split was in part also done to help novice collectors who do not know the history of the era, and thus with a BSA stamp would not think to look under Rhodesia at first glance.
In the end the subgroup system that is the default setup in Colnect can be changed in user account section so that every single subgroup is shown separately in full. Bear in Ming though that this will make the main index page around 2000 lines long which has its own inconveniences especially for users on mobile devices.

Between 1949 and 1990 there is no unique successor of the Reichspost. You can name the current Deutsche Post as successor, but it still leaves the question what to do with the period 1949-1990 unanswered. Reichspost - Deutsche Post - Deutsche Post (DDR) - Deutsche Post makes as much sense as Reichspost - Deutsche Post - Deutsche Bundespost - Deutsche Post. The treatment by Michel makes a lot of sense if you consider Germany as a single country with Deutsche Post split up into Deutsche Post (DDR) and Deutsche Bundespost.

And although "Deutsche Post" was written on German stamps between 1945 and 1949, the four Allies each had their own postal authority. Post-war Germany was also anything but a uniform postal territory.

I have no real issues with the split concept especially if the "Wiki" link explains it all but the error when I select Germany is annoying especially since if I go back and select again it will expand.
I end up using the "multiple" selection feature to narrow the search. The Scott catalog approach with all the different sections (1N, 2N, 3N, etc) yet 10N is part of East Germany is quite confusing for someone new to Germany (like me). I just search by demonination and it will find the stamp as long as I have included it in the search so Colnect is a definite improvement.
When I finally print out Steiner pages, I plan to group Germany in 4 groups - Up to 1945, occupation, FDR/Unified. DDR. I will restart page numbers for each section. This means merging Steiner pages differently.
The index in the back of each Scott catalog is very useful to find entities that get buried in some parent country. I have actually removed this section and keep it separate.

Is anyone having trouble accessing Colnect today (3 August 2024). I was working on Colnect when suddenly was no longer able to connect, and now all i get are connection timed out messages. Colnect is the only website I am having this problem with on my browser (Chrome) all other websites accessing fine. I've cleared my cookies folder and did a DNS flush but still not able to access.
Any ideas of what else i can try on my end??

I'm not having any problems connecting with Colnect. I use MS Edge. Last week I did have a problem with their general search bar, which wouldn't let me find a stamp. Can you try a different browser? I normally have an additional browser for just such circumstances.

I've tried both edge and chrome and neither are working on my desktop
i tried connecting on my cellphone using Wi-Fi and it did connect fine, so there is a problem here on my end with the desktop link
I rebooted my router, but still not able to access after reboot. Have already cleared cookies and flushed the DNS registry
It happened all of a sudden, as I was able to post on Colnect earlier this AM and then it just stopped accepting access. It is the only website I can not access on my desktop at the moment.
Very confused....
