Anyone know the relationship between the Players sailor and Inuit print making?
As I heard the story, a gentleman - his name and purpose escape me, of course - was in the Canadian arctic in the late 1940s or early 50s, working with the locals. The Inuit people saw his pack of Players ciggies and asked him how they were able to draw the picture of the sailor exactly the same on each pack. The man explained the rudimentry principles of printing to them, and that was the beginning of a new artistic movement. The locals learned various printmaking techniques and the rest is history.
True or false? I have no idea, but it makes for a nice story.

Anyone know the relationship between the Players sailor and Inuit print making? I don't think there's any mention of the sailor on the cigarette package here, but there is some coverage regarding the early days of the Cape Dorset artists' cooperative and their print making. Kenojuak Ashevak was one of the most celebrated of the Cape Dorset artists and collectors of Canadian stamps will be well familiar with her art as it has been commemorated at least three times. I've posted this before elsewhere, I'm sure - it's one of my favourite National Film Board pieces. (No Great Britain cinderella content, more's the pity.) Eskimo Artist: KenojuakRyan

Probably Germany but could be any German-speaking land - "um 1820" refers to an approximate year date ("circa 1820"). Maybe those doo-dads in the lower left (roses?) have some significance, a graphic element repeated on all labels in a series or something like that. Ryan

The Great White City was an area of West London that was developed as an Exhibition Centre together with an Athletics Stadium. The Anglo-American Exhibition was the last Exhibition to be staged there and was cut short due to the outbreak of WWI.
As a kid I remember going to an Athletics meet at the Stadium which was sadly demolished to make way for the BBC in the 1980's.

A lovely sheet of British War Fund labels.
The bottom of the sheet reads 'In aid of the Society of the British Red Cross and The Order of St. John of Jerusalem'. Each label is imprinted Perkins Bacon & Co Ltd. London FYI, if you're in the Chicago area, Stamp King has several more of these sheets available!

Looking at this image again, on the computer screen, I notice this lady has very short arms! Trust me, I went to 4 years of art college, and I understand foreshortening. The engraver here kind of missed the mark!

The Stamp Centenary Exhibition, organized by the RPS was held at Lancaster House, Westminster and ran from May 6th to May 14th. Detail Chalon Portrait of Queen Victoria Printed by Perkins Bacon Original sheets (Not of my collection) There is an interesting story about Queen Victoria and Chalon. Helmut and Alison Gernsheim, in their book "The History of Photography, 1685-1914" (New York, St. Louis and San Francisco: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1969), p. 118 relate: "In the early days of daguerrotype portraiture, Queen Victoria asked the fashionable miniature painter Alfred Chalon whether he were not afraid that photography would ruin his profession, 'Ah, non, Madame', he replied in a mixture of French and English, 'photographie can't flatère'." Originally published in "The Women at Home", London, vol. VIII, 1897, p. 812.

I missed the Patriotic War Fund sheetlet when posted a month ago.
I'd done some checking on these a few years ago, and it was based on a poster by Bernard Parkridge entitled "Take Up the Sword of Justice" responding to the sinking of the Lusitania (I believe).

A beautiful set from the Prince of Wales Hospital Fund Vignette : "Charity" by Sir Joshua Reynolds The 2/6d exists in a scarce red-brown shade. Recess printing was carried out on 3 hand operated machines. The only British stamp, bearing a Royal signature. Plates were destroyed July 9th, 1897 after a single printing . My example, just 19 days later, cancelled Finsbury Park SO (Sorting Office) N (North London) "Signed in Plate" (which I do not know what that exactly means) ?

A lovely sheet of Poster Stamps from the Vectis Philatelic service on the UK's Isle of Wight. Designed by Roger Mazillius and local artist Roger Goodburn, they show Island scenes with their corresponding Coats of Arms.
My information tells me that further sheets were at the printers ready for production but I have never found any others up to now.
The Stamps were used to carry Philatelic Mail on the Ryde-Southsea Hovercraft Service and the Ryde-Portsmouth British Rail Ferry.
Many Islanders had long believed that they should have their own stamps but the Post Office could never be persuaded and this idea was conceived from that. Lovely designs, the sheet has all the usual marginal markings one might associate with a Stamp issue and well presented with an information sheet.
Designed and marketed by Vectis Philatelic Services. Printed and Perforated by the Isle of Wight County Press, Newport.

I wasn't sure what to do with these so here they sit........for now !
Britain's Cinderella Stamp Club used 'Subscription' stamps on their payment cards and I have to admit they make a nice display. Using the rare Japanese Local, Sutherland & Co as a centerpiece the labels have a certain eye appeal. Rouletted and printed in large sheets of all colours. You would have needed to remain a member for many years to get a full card !!
The sheets are very large and it was difficult to get decent scans.
