I have the intention of creating a linover honouring Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and get their stamps cancelled in Montreal in 2024 and 2026 on what would be their 80th birthday respectively. But I don't know what Montreal location goes with them. I thought about the place where they had their first public performance while studying in Montreal, but couldn't find any information about this location. Then I thought about their song ‹ Complainte pour Ste-Catherine ›, but Ste-Cahterine street is long, it's not clear in the song which stretch of the street they referred to. For me, a science student, the most iconic song of theirs is without a doubt ‹ NaCl ›, but this song is not location-specific. Any suggestion on what I should draw would be mostly appreciated. I've been thinking about your question, Linda, as I'm a fan of the music made by the McGarrigle sisters and their family. I've read that there is a small public square in Montreal dedicated to Kate McGarrigle's memory - Place Kate-McGarrigle, in Outremont near where she lived. It's just a small plaza but it looks like a nice place in the springtime, and I wonder if you'd like to draw that scene, perhaps with her portrait superimposed?

swvlI do know that public square in Montreal named after Kate McGarrigle, but another Montreal-based McGarrigle fan and I don't think it's very representative of the McGarrigles. The square hasn't been associated with Kate during her lifetime. It's not like the Parc du Portugal -- which is located right across Cohen's Montreal home -- has been associated with Leonard Cohen in his lifetime. I thought about contacting Kate's daughter Martha who runs a small cafe in Montreal for my quest, but due to the pandemic, I haven't been able to visit her cafe yet.

Organist, conductor, cantor, composer and pedagogue all at the same time, the German musician Günther Ramin (1898 - 1956) is hard to categorize. He was a successful concert organist, but later in his professional career devoted himself to conducting, becoming the conductor of the Philharmonic choir of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1940 until his death in 1956, he was appointed the cantor of the famous Thomanerchor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig where he had been a Thomaner in his teenage.

As a fan of popular music, I appreciate the care Royal Mail has taken with some of its recent music issues, like this 2021 set for Paul McCartney. Here are the two strips of stamps for regular use (first class and international rates), and a souvenir mini sheet. I have all but two of the albums featured on the stamps in my vinyl collection, and as an inveterate collector I have to say I love having a second, smaller collection of them on paper

And here are the corresponding se-tenant strips and souvenir mini sheet for Royal Mail's 2022 Rolling Stones stamps. These are also discussed over on their own thread, but I thought they deserved a post on this one too. I am eagerly awaiting the return of a couple of hand-drawn FDCs that I created for two of these stamps and sent off to London about a month ago to be postmarked!

Although the Czech musician Ferdinand Laub (1832 - 1875) did compose, he is best remembered as a violin virtuoso and recording of his compositions remains to this date scant. Beside being a concert violinist, he also taught at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin and at the Moscow Conservatory in Moscow. A friend of Tchaikovsky, Laub also served as the first violin in the premieres of both Tchaikovsky's First and Second String Quartets. This stamp was issued in 1957 in the then Czechoslovakia as part of the 6 stamps of the series "International Music Festival Jubilee".

Like his countryman Ferdinand Laub, Frantisek Ondricek (1857 - 1922) too was a Czech violinist and composer, who is today better remembered as the solo violinist having performed in the premiere of Dvorak's Violin Concerto. This stamp was issued in 1957 in Czechoslovakia as part of the 6 stamps of the same series "International Music Festival Jubilee".

The Italian violinist Niccolo Paganini (1782 - 1840) was a well-known violin virtuose of his time, and remains today one of the best known violinists of all time. His 24 Caprices for Solo Violin have served as an inspiration for many subsequent composers such as Rachmaninoff, whose Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is based on Paganini's Caprices. In modern time, Rachmaninoff's derived work is perhaps better known than it's original, especially the 18th variation that was incorporated by John Barry in the soundtrack of the 1980 film Somewhere in Time. This stamp of Paganini was issued in Italy in 1982 on the occasion of the violinist's 200 birth centenary:

Django (1910 - 1953) was a Belgian-born Romani-French jazz guitarist. On the left is the Belgian stamp issued in 2004, and on the right is the French stamp issued in 1993 in commemoration of him. The Belgian stamp was issued with 4 other stamps featuring Belgian jazz musicians Fud Candrix, Bobby Jaspar, Jack Sels and René Thomas:

The FDC that I prepared for Canada's Eleanor Collins stamp earlier this year finally made its way back to me. Collins is a noted jazz singer who broke some major barriers as a TV star in the 1950s. The lyric quoted in the cachet is from the song "Here's to Life," which Collins sang in a 2019 CBC story celebrating her 100th birthday. This was my first experience servicing a self-made FDC with Canada Post, and I'm happy with the results!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Thank you Linda! I sent my cover to the National Philatelic Centre in Antigonish, NS. It took a while to return, but they were very helpful and did a nice job with the cancel! I can send more detailed instructions to you (or anyone else who’s interested) via PM.

Founded in 1842 and based at the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria, Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic) is today one of the best known orchestra in the world. Here are 3 Austrian stamps issued in honour of Wiener Philharmoniker: (1) Issued in 1959. (2) Issued in 1967, on the occasion of the orchestra's 125th anniversary. (3) Issued in 1992, on the occasion of the orchestra's 150th anniversary. Since 1941, on each New Year's Day, the Wiener Philharmoniker holds the tradition of Vienna New Year's Concert, which predominately features the music of the Strauss family. Starting in 1987, the orchestra chooses a different conductor for its New Year's Concert, 4 of these conductors have been honoured by stamp releases.

Founded in 1900, Wiener Symphoniker (Vienna Symphony Orchestra) should not be confused with the better known Wiener Philharmoniker. There are 2 stamps issued to commemorate its foundation: (1) Issued in 1975 on the occasion of the orchestra's 75th anniversary. (2) Issued in 2000 on the occasion of the orchestra's centenary.

I think the most interesting thing about this is the fact that we have here a rare case of a person alive (at 102!) to see the stamp which was created tp commemorate her illustrious career, and to attend the unveiling if I recall correctly. YOU GO, Eleanor!

Charles Mingus was a jazz composer and bassist, besides a great pianist and bandleader. Pithecanthropus Erectus is my favorite album, but, there are a lot of jewels, as, Ah Hum, and "one of the greatest achievements in orchestration by any composer in jazz history" (wiki): The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. On the other hand, his temperament was strong and sometimes aggressive, for which he was given the nickname " The Angry Man of Jazz". Issued on September, 1995. Michel US 2633

The cover that I prepared for Canada Post's Salome Bey stamp this spring just arrived back with me! The cachet is meant to complement the one I made for the Eleanor Collins stamp earlier this year (viewable upthread), and the quotation comes from something that Bey's daughter said in her New York Times obituary in 2020. Canada Post did a very nice job with this cancellation, and their customer service is excellent. Thanks hdm1950 for suggesting this idea — I'm happy to give Canada's First Lady of the Blues a spot right next to its First Lady of Jazz!

I don't think this has been posted on the forum yet -- a very nice 85 Cent stamp issued by Germany earlier this year to honor David Bowie. I like the design, and think it's cool that Germany put Bowie on a stamp, presumably to recognize his creatively fruitful years in Berlin in the 1970s (which produced some of his very best work, like the "Heroes" and Low albums). This stamp sold out quickly, but I was able to find an inexpensive mint example online.

John Lennon The 21st September is marked each year as the International Day of Peace by the United Nations. 2021 was also the 50th anniversary of John Lennon's song Imagine. It was appropriate, then, to commemorate John Lennon and his song with these United Nations stamps from New York, Geneva and Vienna. Illustrated by Norwegian artist and engraver Martin Mörck. I purchased this cover from the Norwegian Post Office stand at London 2022 along with a signed engraving of Czeslaw Slania, also by Martin Mörck. I had to pay in Norwegian kroners, fortunately they took cards
