I’m posting these Lundy stamps on the Cinderella board because we haven’t yet identified an area for local post. Perhaps we can rename this board "Cinderellas and Local Posts" and add a "Local Post" sub-forum. For those who may not have been aware, Lundy lies off the coast of North Devon, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Bristol Channel. It is a granite outcrop three and a half miles long and half a mile wide. Lundy operates what it professes to be the oldest private postal service in the world. Since 1929 almost 350 different stamps have been issued. The currency unit for Lundy stamps is the Puffin, which equates to the British Penny and dates back to the days when puffins were in fact used as currency on Lundy. Lundy stamps can be ordered by writing to Lundy Postal Service, Lundy, Bristol Channel, Bideford, EX39 2LY. For more information on Lundy, or to request a brochure to plan your next vacation, click here.I’d like to see more of those 350 stamps that Lundy has issued so please share yours with the forum.

Thanks for posting this, Steve! I have sort of passively collected Lundy off and on over the years. I really liked the puffin stamps, and started picking up bits and pieces here and there.
As I begin to go through the boxes of material that seem to have accumulated, I'll do some scanning and posting.

Jack, You should probably slow down a bit, lest we all get spoiled and routinely expect such responsiveness out of Admin. Thanks for what you're doing for the membership!!!

But Local Posts ARE Cinderellas. I made the assertion that local posts were not cinderellas on the basis of these definitions taken from the U.S. Stamp Society Glossary of Terms -- under this definitional construct, local posts have postal validity, albeit a private one: - Cinderella - a nickname frequently used for fantasy labels with no postal validity.
- Local Post - a private postal system operating in a limited area, usually a major city. Example: Hussey’s Post, New York, N.Y. Local posts once played a significant role in mail delivery.

In a way, I was teasing. My definition of a Cinderella follows the line of UK's Cinderella Stamp Club, one of the oldest Cinderella organizations. They maintain that anything not listed in a regular stamp catalogue [not specialized], is a Cinderella. I follow that line. But to each their own, as it is with Postage stamps too. If we all followed the leader it would be a very boring hobby !! Plus, I wouldn't be here now changing the angle of your Lundy topic !!! Better post a Lundy pic to keep it on track:

Plus, I wouldn't be here now changing the angle of your Lundy topic !!!... Michael, If there is anything that I've learned over the years is that definitions matter! And you're welcome to change the angle of any topic of your choosing. On this point I propose that we simply agree to disagree. Now to continue the topic, the blog Great Britain Philately provides some examples of Lundy stamps being used on cover to pay for the forwarding service to/from the mainland. Included in the narrative was the following explanation of the placement of Lundy stamps on cover: I'd love to see members post images of any Lundy stamps that they have, either on or off cover.

Here is a Lundy on a postcard piece that arguably did some duty, postal or otherwise, in 1962.

My Kenmore display of Puffins is my favorite 'odd-ball' holding (considering I bill myself as a US only collector).

1929 : 1/2 Puffin (Vignette appropriately shows half a Puffin) The 1929 1 Puffin shows the complete bird. Exist Perforate and imperforate. Puffins are vocal at their breeding colonies, they are silent at sea. They are considered a delicacy in the Faroes.

I have some Lundy but know zero about them, they are probably common recent issues (the overprint 'Europa' is a bit of a hint). Still, they were a present from a good friend... The last triangles are not Lundy I am guessing, but they came in the same lot. Any comments would be appreciated.

The triangle stamps are upside down. They read 'Herm Island' and it was a vacation spot for visiting martians back in the late 70's/early 80's.
Hope that helps,
Inspektor

Nice Spoof items Inspektor !! Gerald King is a real gem in phunny Philately !!
Perfs 14, Herm is one of the Channel Islands close to Guernsey and now uses their stamps. Nice little lot.
The ½puffin shown by Rod is from the first set of Lundy stamps in the late 1920's. Not only does the 1 Puffin value depict one Puffin as Rod mentioned, but the other values 6,9 and 12 Puffins also show their value in Puffins !! Very neat idea for such an old item. Love 'em.

Puffins are vocal at their breeding colonies, they are silent at sea. They are considered a delicacy in the Faroes. I found this National Geographic video on rescued puffins. I learned the following: #1 - baby puffins are called pufflings. #2 - pufflings don't have the fancy paint job on their beak. #3 - you can throw a puffling like a baseball. Amazing. video.nationalgeographic.com/video/animals/birds-animals/seabirds/puffin_atlantic_iceland/Ryan

Regarding the designation of "Cinderella" I would absolutely consider locals to be cinderellas. I rather like the how the designation came to be, and still use it to explain the term to the curious, both inside and outside of the philatelic world:
"The simplest definition of a cinderella is any stamp or stamp-like item whose inclusion is not allowed in F.I.P. sanctioned exhibitions.
The more romantic definition is that just as in the fairy tale Cinderella was not allowed to attend the Royal Ball, the cinderella stamp is not allowed to attend the exhibition."
The lines are somewhat blurred now, since the F.I.P. has relaxed some of its restrictions about what is allowed in exhibiting. But most cinderella collectors and dealers still follow the older guidelines and consider anything that is not a government postal service issued postage stamp to be a cinderella. I agree with that, but to go a step further, I would also say that the lines can be a bit blurry at times. My advice is to collect whatever strikes your fancy. I would also suggest you stay away from "stamp snobs" which is my name for collectors or dealers who try to tell you what is "correct" or "proper" to add to your collection. One of the reasons I am so drawn to cinderellas is because the traditional rules about how or what to collect don't apply.
Just my own humble opinion.

I colect private carrier/local post stamps but sort of steer away from both these and Loyd's because of all the debauchery involved and the superfluous re-prints and outright fakes & forgeries. Nice stuff!

It should be mentioned that the carrier stamps are decidedly American and printed for private carries and really don't have much (or anything) to do with the Lundy of Europe. Still great looking stuff!
