These things cause me great consternation. Seems like every time I see one, it has totally different meanings for the same stamp placements. It's like a secret code where neither person knows the key Kirk

I have done a little research on this kirk. You would send your sweetheart a postcard of the stamp positions so you two knew the code. It was more for fun than anything, and as long as you both knew it -it's all good. Also, you must take into consideration the era and the conservativeness of it and so if your mom would find it then you simply changed to another card that way your mom deciphers it and gets another message all together. kind of humorous.
also a version of this was used during the U.S. civil war to send coded messages across state lines too.
