I'll split the cost with you (sort of) if I can keep it in my album. Instead of those peelable stamp hinges, I'll use Elmer's glue to mount it to make sure it doesn't fall out

Wow sounds like it is going to be quite the auction according to the Linns article! I will have to save up my nickels.

I have a nice use example of the wove paper issue. In reality, I have little interest in paying such an amount for a paper variety which is difficult to distinguish to the naked eye. If I had that money in my philatelic budget, there are many other Canadian or world wide classics I would acquire instead. Just my opinion .

This auction was quite the show with some amazing large queen issues. However I am not even sure the 32 above actually sold. Closing numbers were just at $475000 so a far cry from what was expected. There is the 3rd copy just recently found in an approval book coming up in the fall from eastern auctions. I have a 33 3c on laid and will always keep looking for the other 2 . By the time I find one maybe they will only be worth a hundred grand and I can use the elmers glue but upside down to show the paper.

What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

Closing numbers were just at $475000 so a far cry from what was expected. I think the $900K estimate was as much a "hoped for" number as it was "expected". When something comes on the market so rarely, it's probably impossible to set an accurate estimate. Even though the sale price was far lower than the estimate, it was also far higher than the current catalogue value of $250K. I would imagine nobody is crying too severely over the sale amount. The #33 3 cent on laid paper is one of the very few issues still missing from my collection. It seems like off-centred stamps predominate on that issue, and combined with the frequent damage to the laid paper stamps, I simply have never come across one I wanted to buy. Was there a difference in the laid paper on these late issues? My early pre-confederation issues on laid paper look fine, the paper is strong and robust, but on the perforated issues it seems like there's always a corner missing or a big hole where a tooth should be. Poor stamp dentistry on #31 & #33! Ryan

My copy of 33 is in really rough shape but the laid lines show fairly well. Many of the other laid papers I have (non canadian) also seem to be in better shape and a better quality paper. If I understand right the mesh that was used to make the paper for canadian issues was regular wove mesh and they added the straight across wire. Maybe this was done to try and increase the durabilty of the paper but it seems like it was an after thought. Apparently there are copies of the early pence issues that have been certified as laid but you can not even see the lines with the naked eye anymore. I would never buy even with cert one of these if I could not see the laid lines.
