I have always found the Ostropa Souvenir sheet interesting. To quote the article: I find it interesting that they chose to use sulfuric acid in stamp gum.

One of the blanks in my collection of Third Reich stamps....way too pricey for my budget. There's a sheet on sale at my local stamp shop at $600.00..i always take a look at it when i pop in.

A lot of the old gums used for stamps were based on mixtures of dextrins, gum Arabic, gum tragacanth and other additives. The dextrins were manufactured by a controlled break-down (hydrolysis) of starch with acid and heat. In this case sulfuric acid may have been used and not neutralized properly, hence some remained in the gum.
I doubt that it was added intentionally as Germans were and are excellent chemists.

I'll revive this old thread with my last auction win of this month, which is more of a judgment call. They were selling this Ostropa 1935 souvenir sheet, which has obviously suffered infamy under some unscrupulous scissors, and hence at a very affordable price when compared to a pristine copy, and which has sat near the bottom of my wish list for more than a decade (when ordered from least to most expensive). Since the stamps themselves are in perfectly fine condition, I went for it anyway:

Congratulations! every German stamp collector wants an OSTROPA souvenir sheet Be careful, if there is still gum on the back. It very often contains sulfuric acid.

I'm indeed quite happy to have snagged it. Yes, I saw the discussion about the acid in the gum in the earlier posts from the thread. I checked, and there does not seem to be gum on the back.

Though is nice to dream. David
