I was contacted by my friend ray.mac and Al E. Gator while on their way to a stamp show about a classic Jersey Shore cover. I didn't think I could get it but I threw caution to the wind and picked it up anyway!! Glad I did too! I haven't done any research on it yet as I just got it but I wanted to share the sellers image of it.

A US Census review of Edward S. Carter of Keokuk, Iowa, who's wife was Mary (agrees with the above link) was a salesman by trade and appears to have been an inventor of sorts, involved in some patents for a railroad car coupling and boot blacking case, as shown in the links below:

I have no idea if any of those patents were actually marketable, but at least he had patent rights to them.

Obviously, more research is needed.

Be it known that I, EDWARD S. CARTER, of Keokuk, Lee county, Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists ofa clevis-shaped link connected by its ends to the draw-bar of ordinary form by a bolt passing through the drawbarhorizontally and extending each way therefrom to the sides of the car, where it is cranked to be worked by hand for swinging the link up and down to couple with a strong head of the ordinary coupling-pin projecting upward from the draw-bar, and securing a common link in the socket of the drawbar, making an extremely-sin: ple device to be operated from the sides of the car, or from the top, to which a rod extends from an arm on the link bolt for the purpose, all as hereinafter fully described.

Reference is to be had to the-accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in

which similar letters of reference indicatecorresponding partsin both figures.

Figurel is a perspective view of the end of a freight carwith my improved coupling de vices applied to it, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the heads of the draw-bars of acouple b,than commonly used,especiallyin the upper part,to receive the pin, which I make larger, and construct with a strougextension of the head 0 sufficiently above the top of the drawbar to couple by a clevis-link, d, swinging down over the pin-head onto the upper surface of the draw-bansaid clevis-link being coiled around a bolt, e, by its endsf, and madefast to it, and connected to the draw bar thereby, said bolt passing through a hole in the draw-bar; or it may be a box or cap attached to the top of the draw-bar, and being used to swing the link up and down to couple and uncouple the cars.

In order that the link may be worked from the sides of the cars, the bolt 0 is extended each way thereto, and the ends 9 are bent up, as shown, for cranks or levers by which to work it The rod 6 is also connected by an arm, h, with a rod, '0", extending to the top of the car, for working the link therefrom. The drawbars have the usual link-socket,-i, and a comnion link,j, may be secured in one or both of the coupled draw-bars, to beempln yed in case cars not having the improved coupling are to be coupled at any time. These links may be shoved back in the sockets, outol' the way, when not to be used. The pins will be secured by keys j.

The simplicity of this improved coupling, together with its manifestly-durable quality, will be understood at once.

I am aware that it is old to employ a link arranged to operate outside of the draw-head and to take over the head of the-pin of the opposite draw-head, as is also mechanism for operating the link from the top and sides of the car. v

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure y Letters Patent- In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head a and coupling pin b, having the upwardly-flared head 0, of the clevis shaped EDWARD. S. CARTER.

BOOT-BLACKING CASE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,11 l, dated March 1 1866.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, EDWARD S. CARTER, of Keokuk, in the'county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Pocket Boot-Blacking Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of 1n y invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section taken on the plane of the line a: ar, Fig. l.

The object of my invention is to provide a compact and convenient boot-blackin case intended especially for travelers use; and my invention consists in a case containing a box of blacking and a blacking and a polishing brush, constructed so that the brushes may be afxed to the outside of the case, and thus the case itself made to serve the purpose of a handle to the brushes.

A designates a metallic case, which is round in transverse sections inthe present instance, but may be of any desired shape. It is provided at one or both ends with a cover, a.

B B designate the blacking and polishing brushes respectively. These are of a size to permit of their being put inside the case A.

C is a box of blacking, also of a size to allow of its being placed within the case A.

Each of these brushes B B have a screw thread, b, cut into the block or head, and this is intended to be screwed upon a screw-pin, D, secured to the outside ofthe box, as is shown clearly in red in Fig. 2 but any other means may be adopted for temporarily securing the brushes B B to thecase.

The invention produces a neat and small case which can be carried in a gentlemans pocket, and it will be found ot great use to travelers and those who desire to have their blacking brushes and box in as compact a form 'as possible for transportation. l

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-

Thre combination of the case A and the brushes B B and brush-fastening` E, substatitially as described.
