Azores : 1894 When I first came across these fellows, I thought maybe "remainders" or "Cancelled to Order" but apparently they were all cancelled genuinely like this. Circular Postmark "1394 Centenerio 1894" celebrating the 500th birth anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator. (March 3rd) Azores, the place where Colombus first wrote down and outlined his recent discoveries of the New World, (circa 3,500 words) He had to beat Pinzon, and sent his letter off from Lisbon when he landed, his letter appeared in printed form two weeks before he got to Barcelona. Within two months, Columbus' voyage was common knowledge throughout every major city in Europe. Thanks to the printed form and the Mail. [Image link broken]

I picked up about 30 Azores stamps last year. My sister was born there! My dad was in the air force and stationed there in the mid-1950s. I used some of these stamps on a wall display i gave my sister at her retirement.

How/where did you discover that these cancellations are not CTOs? Several in my Azores set have this cancellation, but also the 1000r in my Portuguese set has it. Hence, like you, I had assumed CTO or some such. I notice that Mitch's Azores and Portuguese sets have the same cancelation.

Perhaps still an opinion, like a lot of stuff in Philately, verification is required. catalogue.klaseboer.com/vol2/html/portu3.htmand other places, I visited, which I cannot recall, but will search again. Numerous links refer this as COMMEMORATIVE TEMPORARY HANDSTAMP OF 1894 www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/portugal-1876-21-r-jornaes-paper-131577059

On a side note, if you haven't been or are new to the Azores, here's some of my travel photos from a few years back:
A very interesting place! Will have to add the few postmarked postcards I have in due course...

For those interested, this stunning 1905 cover addressed to rather a unique destination for any Azores cover is being auctioned by Dr Reinhard Fischer later this month (Auction #144).
With an opening bid of only €80, looks like a nice buy. Although that said, I haven't looked to see just how many buyers' fees are charged on top of the hammer price.
