This is one of the many reasons I enjoy TSF! As I was reading through this chain, I was wondering to myself if I had any Jamaica stamps in the collection. I went to the wall of binders and found the "J" binder. When I opened it the first thing I saw were stamps from Jamaica. Not that there were pages and pages but it was a nice little collection of stamps. So I managed to spend some time re-visiting those stamps. I cannot remember the last time I had a reason to get into that particular binder, so it was nice visit.
Really enjoyable way to spend some early hours on a Saturday morning, and all thanks to this thread!!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

these pix suggest Anil has taken these pictures under electric light - daylight is always best if we can acquire the patience to wait until the following morning - he said, after bitter experience;-) Nice stamps Anil.

'frankly my dear', I don't see these as being 'dirty' - unless the electric light has obscured their real colour. Seriously, they look fine to me, but by all means Anil do try a little 3% peroxide solution if you can source some. I understand greens can potentially give problems - I need to post some pix of the 'after' appearance - I recently dabbled a little with peroxide - not so sure the results are stunning, but perhaps some improvement. I wonder if there is any mileage in gently rubbing the face of the stamp with some granulated eraser - will give it a go.

The Postage Stamps of Jamaica from 1860 – 1960 Jamaica is an island country in the Caribbean Sea and the West Indies. At 10,990 square kilometers, it’s the third largest island after Cuba and Hispaniola of the Greater Antilles. It lies about 145 km south of Cuba, 191 km west of Hispaniola and 215 km south-east of the Cayman Islands.
Jamaica was the first British colony to establish a post office. In 1705 a statute was created to legally establish a postal service for several of the West Indies islands, also allowing the postmaster to charge a fee for mail delivery. Letters were carried by a ‘packet service’ until 1711, shortly thereafter, the postal service lapsed until 1720. Local planters typically preferred to entrust their letters directly to merchant ship captains, and considered the charging of fees to be tantamount to extortion. Matters came to a head in 1755, when a select committee examined the finances of the postal system, but the Postmaster continued well into the 1780s, eventually establishing some two dozen post offices across the island.
British stamps were used from May 8th 1858 in Kingston and from November of 1858 at the other offices. Until 1860, the postal service was under the control of Great Britain despite repeated efforts by Jamaican authorities to take over. Soon afterwards, British stamps were no longer accepted, and De La Rue was commissioned to produce Jamaica’s first stamps.
In 1863 four letter boxes were placed around Kingston. In 1868, Inland delivery was increased from twice to three times per week. Mail transport was originally via mule, followed by rail in the 1860s, then back to roads again due to difficulties with rail dependability. It wasn’t until the late 1870s that the Postal system returned to the railways after improvements had been made.
Jamaica joined the Universal Postal Union on April 1st 1877.
All stamps mounted on PALO Hingeless pages. Rob
