An interesting set issued in 1965 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Otto von Bismarck, German statesman and diplomat. He masterminded the Unification of Germany in 1871 and was its first Chancellor. These stamps are, at once, perforated, imperforate and rouletted. I thought at first that they had been cut down but, in fact, they are the end four stamps from a sheetlet consisting of 5 vertical strips of 4, see below. Note that one of the stamps shows Bismarck the capital of North Dakota. So renamed in 1873 to attract German immigrant settlers and investment in the railroad. The stamps describe Bismarck as the Pioneer and Admonisher for the Unity of Germany (In this context Admonish means advise or urge earnestly).

Biener & Chusid Receipt Stamp I found online The Book of Old Firms of the City Of Hannover in the year 1927 plus a short reference in Wikimedia Commons. This is what I could find out about the business but the story has a devastating ending. Philipp (or Fischl/Fischyl) Biener and Max Chusid founded a furniture and goods credit house in Magdeburg in 1898 and in Hanover the following year. The business became a very successful enterprise. It was possible to purchase furniture on a credit basis with the stamps recording the payments. These receipt stamps seem to vary in value from 1 mark to 20 marks, with different colours, and are date stamped. Biener ran the Magdeburg store and Chusid ran the Hannover store. When Chusid died in 1923 his wife Gilela took over in Hannover. Biener died in Theresienstadt concentration camp on 5th December 1942.

FDGB (Freier Deutscher Gewerbschaftsbund) The Free German Trade Union Federation. Union Dues Stamps
The FDGB was founded in 1946 pre-dating East Germany which was formed in 1949. Membership of the Trade Union was ostensibly voluntary but effectively essential to develop a career in East Germany. Indeed, the FDGB was run by the ruling Socialist Unity Party of Germany known as the SED in German The tiny union dues stamps are shown top left below. Below them is an example of a Talon (coupon) stamp which was used as a control stamp and kept separately. Additional Solidarity charity stamps were introduced later but the purchase of these was purely voluntary and 11 examples are shown here. In this case, the solidarity was with other communist regimes or parties around the world. Examples here are for Vietnam, Latin America, West Germany, South America and Africa.

A Warning to German Youth - Foreign Legion Escape from Ship The romantic notion of joining the French Foreign Legion would appeal to many young men. The reality, of course, was much more harsh. This poster stamp, part of a series, warns against joining up. The incident depicted is based on actual instances of jumping ship. The Western Mail of Perth, Australia, dated 18th April 1929, for example, gives the following account: "Details have reached here of the dramatic escape of a number of Germans who were serving in the French Foreign Legion and who were passing through the Suez Canal from Algiers en route to Indo-China in a troop ship with 400 men on board. There had already been demonstrations at Algiers owing to the presence of the Germans on the ship. The 20 men concerned, some of whom had already served two to three years, plotted to escape and agreed to make the attempt when the ship was passing through the Suez Canal because the guards could not use weapons in a neutral zone. They went overboard near Ismailia but two were caught in the propellers and fatally injured. The remainder reached the shore and made their way to Port Said, where they boarded a returning German steamer"

I found this series and am seeking assistance in identifying them. Google Images and Stamp Identifier did not return results. I skimmed the TSF Cinderella posts in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria as well without success. With the Old German script and German overprint, I am hoping a member of this topic can lend some assistance.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Turns out these are quite common and appear to have even been reproduced. This set is mint unhinged and was with the 1950's era estate lot I am going through so I would think they are originals. Michel does show them in the Germany occupation section but most catalogues do not include these so I am posting on this thread. I was not aware that la Legion des Volontaires Francais even existed.

The stamps were printed and sold by the 'Action Committee of the French Legionnaires to combat Bolshevism.' The stamps depict the military forces of the legion, "volunteer" Waffen SS units fighting for the Nazis. Michel # VI - X. Rob

REL1948 I had read up on these last evening Rob and cannot help but wonder what repercussions those that joined this questionable unit may have faced after the war. The printing quality is pretty good for an item of this sort so I think I will keep them.

I believe this is a World War 1 charity stamp seeking donations for wounded and casualties. It was mounted in with the classic German stamps. The old collection I am going through keeps turning up interesting Cinderellas from the two world wars.

For the Aviator's Home World War I era Cinderellas, part of a longer set in various colours, depicting German monarchs, royalty, airmen, politicians and allies. Sold at 5 pfennigs each. I usually get outbid on these but I was lucky enough to win two smaller lots, all shown here.

Contribution for the alleviation of War Suffering 1914 A most curious lot. Believed to be of German origin rather than Austrian and issued as a set of 12. This part set depicts the usual suspects, Kaiser Wilhelm I, Emperor Franz Josef and others but with an English translation and denominated in cents. It would appear, then, to have been issued for the US market who were neutral up to 1917. Available in other colours.

Kaiser Wilhelm II Silver Jubilee 1888-1913 Part of a long series showing regiments etc. It is relatively rare to find these in complete sheetlets of 6 since they tend to get broken up. This particular sheetlet shows appears to show the Bavarian Service Corps.
