@wert - I don't think it possible to cut a stamp in half, rejoin the halves and make it taller than it was. (compare height with intact stamp at left )

Hi JeffS I believe the cut line was not overlapped...I did a quick software measurement { removing white line } and it measured almost perfect.
Just saying...Robert

JeffS there is a slight gap that I saw on the eBay posting. The seller thought I was seeing things and then messaged back that I was correct. He had had the cover in his collection for years and never noticed it. I bought it first for the franking and secondly as a conversation piece. It has certainly become the second. 😁 I am on the @wert team. It was done so precisely that it appears it was done on purpose. Like Robert says, we will never know why.

I guess this little eye glass box stretches the limits of what one would call a cover. I wish it had a clear dated cancel. Hard to believe one could mail a parcel in Canada around 1920 for .02.

An 1899 advertising cover with the 2 cent Imperial Post issue (Scott #86). A nice flag cancel to boot! Unfortunately the remains of a red adhesive label (red with zigzag edges) detract a bit, but the couple red numeral markings and the scratched-out pencil-mark "10" kind of pique the curiosity. A lot of early Canada material to wade through from an auction lot I've just begun to sort....

Spent some time looking at my Canada album this evening and realized I had not shared this nice 1869 large queen combination cover. Sadly the post mark is not clear enough to see where it was mailed from other than it was in Nova Scotia. It came to Port Medway in Queens County, Nova Scotia and I expect my dad got it from someone there in his younger years. It features a Unitrade 22 and 24.

A new arrival today for my postmarks of Queens County, Nova Scotia collection. I have countless covers mailed from Liverpool, NS but none with the 1938 .13 Halifax Harbour stamp (Unitrade 242). I guess I am a bit slow as I never questioned why there would be a 13 cent stamp but I now know it was the rate for domestic registered mail at that time. It is nice that the letter was mailed to Middlefield, NS in Queens County with great postmarks on the back from the village post office. These small post offices were often in peoples homes or a convenience store. Library and archives Canada has a wonderful resource for post offices and postmasters from across Canada. Very often the appointment was political back in the day as seen by this bit of history for this post office:
Winton Webber 1926-01-02 1932-08-10 Dismissal, political partisanship
Mrs. Fannie N. Morton 1878-09-11 1932-09-03 1946-01-29 Resignation
It is a sure sign that I am old when I knew well the sender of this letter. I will have to try and show it to his daughter the next time I am home.
Note that the office in Middlefield appears to have set the wrong date on their cancel or the maybe it was the bigger post office in Liverpool that was wrong. It appears to have been mailed on August 12/42 and arrived in August 4/42.

Happy Easter weekend to you all. I prefer my Queens County, Nova Scotia postmarks on cover but as is common they are more easily found on postcards. This 1908 Easter postcard was mailed from West Berlin, Nova Scotia which is a small village along the sea shore in Queens County. It is indicative of the German heritage along the south shore of the province.

Here's another The Admiral Beatty Hotel was Saint John's first luxury hotel, located on King Square in the heart of the City's "uptown". It was built in 1925 and quickly became the hub of business and cultural activities in the City. It is now a heritage site and has been converted to a seniors residence. It is next door to the restored Imperial Theatre, one of Canada's finest performing arts centres.

There is nothing especially unique about this cover but it is of interest because it was one of a collection of 25 letters I bought a few years ago which obviously came from the correspondence of Professor James Gibson Hume (1860-1949), a very noted Canadian psychologist, researcher and lecturer. All of the covers enclosed the original letters and I have often thought they may have some historical value. I've also wanted to transcribe the letters, but I seem to be so busy with other projects that it has never become a priority. Maybe I will hire my 16-year-old granddaughter to help with it ! The writing has faded in some letters and I have taken care to make sure they are well protected.

I do not own this cover. It came up on one of my eBay daily email search results. It made me smile. So often we get impressed with the fine cursive writing we find on old covers but there is also the other side of the scale. It is amazing how some of these ever made it to the receiving party. I did a bit of a Google search and came across an orphanage referred to as a sheltering home with a Mrs. Birt operating it at this time. sca-archives.liverpool.ac.uk/Record/131484

The last of my purchases from 2022 arrived in the mail with this little 1939 cover from a small fishing community in my home county of Queens County, Nova Scotia. I was sitting on the beach in Mexico when I learned I had won this one. This area today probably has a population of less than 100 with some that are still working fishermen. Most of my postmarks from these little villages are on postcards because people tend to keep them. I do have a rather plain 'Congratulations' postcard from Eagle Head with a 1908 postmark. When possible I prefer a cover and this one is a bit newer than I like but who knows if an older cover will ever show up for sale. The post office was probably in a private home or a tiny village store. The first post office opened on August 1, 1887 and the last one was closed on July 31, 1959. This cover passed through my home town of Liverpool on it's way to Toronto. There is a little beach at Eagle Head if one can brave the cold North Atlantic water. This painting of the beach is by Gordon Eastcott Payne, a recognized Canadian artist, who had an ocean front home for several years in the county. I used to sit and watch him paint as a kid because his place in Hunt's Point was on the same beach as my grand parents cottage. I have 2 of his paintings including this one. I still hope to get one of his of our beach.

In my ongoing search for Queens County, Nova Scotia stamps and covers with local postmarks I acquired this postcard from Port Mouton with a Port Joli cancel that came in my mail yesterday. The octagonal building was always referred to as the round hall. It was built around 1900 and demolished in the mid 1960's due to poor condition and little use. I already had this postcard with a 1908 Port Mouton postmark but had nothing from the neighbouring community of Port Joli. They are 5 to 10 miles apart. Much to my surprise when the Port Joli one arrived and I compared it to the other one I discovered that both had been mailed within days of each other by Lizzie Burgess. Both were mailed to different people in Poughkeepsie, NY. There are strong connections between Nova Scotia and the north eastern states. Many locals went there for work. What were the odds of finding these postcards many years apart from different sources? Our hobby is full of surprises.

This posting is a bit premature because I just bought it last night on eBay so it is not in my hands. I have more than enough covers with the Liverpool, Nova Scotia cancels but the colour of the 3 cent Canada small Queen (Unitrade 37j caught my eye. It dates from 1884 so that confirms the general Unitrade numbering. I am hoping it is not just another case of sulphurization but actually one of the listed reddish brown varieties. I am sitting in Copenhagen now so I will have to wait till I am home in 2 weeks to see it in person.

In the natural light of my condo the stamp does not have as strong a rose colour. Here is my scan. I checked the perforation and it is 12 X 12 as are the other covers I have with the Unitrade 37. Many collectors have spent their life studying this stamp and its many varieties. I have never gone that deep but with time I now have a nice selection of covers from my home county of Queens in Nova Scotia. It is a challenge to determine paper type when on a cover but for sure it appears I have several shades. Some of the shading may be due to chemical reactions but I am not about to try peroxide for fear of the stamps lifting from the covers. The rarest of colours with the 12X12 perforation is the copper or Indian red. I doubt any of these are that shade but someone who has studied this stamp may think otherwise.

Stan, I had not bought this cover for that obliteration but it was listed as an important feature of the cover. The listing says 'cancelled by W (D&S 749).' The letter had been mailed to the town of Caledonia, Queens County and the local postmark there was Caledonia Corner. I see from my notes I bought it on May 1, 2002 which was in early eBay days when things like this were only available at stamp auction houses. I shudder at the price I paid then knowing now how little most of these covers sell for. I am sure D&S is a specialized fancy cancel or obliteration catalogue. That may be it's saving grace.

What were the odds of finding these postcards many years apart from different sources? Our hobby is full of surprises. I'm not sure if it's in Queen's County, but my father's side of the family grew up in and around New Germany, NS. A few miles inland from Bridgewater. Many of the men left Nova Scotia for work as the Great Depression was severly affecting rural folk. Farmers and woodcutters barely made ends meet. Even in 1970 rural Nova Scotia was so "back woods" (primitive) to a young city dweller like me. I was ten years old and just getting interested in stamps when visiting for the first and only time in 1970. Amazing how many Wentzells lived in the area. About a hundred were listed in the local phone book! My late aunt Margaret was the postmistress and I remember looking at the new Canadian stamps she sold. The Queen definitive series, mostly. But I wanted to save the bit of change I had earned for soda pop and gum. My cousins' address was PO Box 5. Their phone number, if you were dialing from within a few miles ("the exchange") was two. Just 2! But you had to listen for two short rings and only answer then, as the "party line" could be picked up by neighbors 3, 4, or 5. What fun I had with the "party line" talking to other Wentzell kids.... Wentzell's Lake upper left, just south of New Germany (offscreen) Bridgewater is bottom right. I keep looking for covers from or to that general area, or contain the name Wentzell (recipient or sender) but I haven't had any luck so far. Next post will show some covers I almost forgot I had from Canada,,,,

The "bisect" cover on top I believe to be a contrivance (fake) as there is no part of the cancel "tying" it to the cover to the right of the stamp. It, and most of the other Canada covers I will post, came from an auction lot I purchased two or three years ago. Yes it took me that long to "wade through" all the stuff (mostly nothing spectacular, to put it mildly!). Tons and tons of 1950's - 60's FDC's, postcards, common definitives on cover. But there were a few hidden gems! I didn't see the " Too Late" hand stamp on the bottom cover until I proofread the post this morning. Interesting semi-script hand stamp! I really need to get a Brookman catalog and some more literature on early Canada. The Canadian Postal History stamp bug is has bitten me and is rapidly spreading throughout my poor body :-)
