Picked this plastic White Owl cigar box up today, mainly for the almost intact strip. Appears to be a Series C (1935) RG622, for those with a copy of C.D. Ryan's Catalogue of Federal Tobacco Stamps of Canada. Just a clear plastic box so I'd like to separate them and preserve the strip in a mount. Already tried a soak, but the plastic's not giving up its treasure. Don't want to damage the strip, obviously. So, anyone have any idea how I might manage this? Steam? Chemicals? Colourful language? Oh, and an fyi, I did not do that damage just below the black serial number. Came that way.

Might try lighter fluid, starting on just a corner so, if it doesn't work, you can stop before soaking the whole thing.

is there a difference between Rosonol and other lighter fluids. I seem to have trouble finding that brand around here.

Don't know. Perhaps some of the Canadian members have experience with it. There are some internet sites with information about naphtha and Ronsonol in Canada

Hi I was once told that Ronsonol did not have any chemicals that made it "greasy" to the touch. Therefore, it did not leave any residue. I have an old can of Zippo fluid and between that and Ronsonol one can tell the difference just by feel.

White owl is a prominent cigar brand and I've seen different pcs of their advertising items sell high on shows. (I'm not a stoagie smoker) I realize from a stamp perspective getting that strip off makes sense but I'd almost want to keep intact . Look at it as an oversized advert cover . Now as for preserving and displaying in the collection that is tricky. If you have an old thick enough stock book - cut out the rectangle dimensions through each page to fit the whole case inside like a hidden compartment. Just a thought but cool piece and proper usage.

Honestly Nitro, the plastic box, though it has the name White Owl embossed on the top, looks like crap. Not worth the space, in my opinion. As the the freezer, I've had limited success with that method, but I'll try it anyway. I've nothing to loose (except my wife thinking I've lost my mind again).

White spirits (dry cleaning fluid) should lift that nicely. I use on all my Aust self stick. Try a tiny corner first. It should lift off with gum intact, and you'll need to (if it lifts successfully) re-dip on several occaisions to remove the mucilage completely. (sharp edge / cloth) Any mucilage left, will tend to stick to anything it accidentally comes in contact with. Be vigilant.
I don't envy you.

White Spirits? Google tells me that that is the British term for mineral spirits. Same thing? I have some of that. Also have a product called Goof Off, which smells like lighter fluid and comes in a squirt can similar to the lighter fluid cans my ol' Dad use to buy back in the day. Goof Off is used as a paint/glue/adhesive remover. It contains Xylene, Methyl Carbitol, Surfactant. Sounds positively ghastly! My concern is I think I have one kick at the can here. If I use the wrong stuff I could stain the paper strip and it would have been all for naught. Be nice to be able to save the little guy.

Thanks for the link Rod. I already have it, and am, in fact in the process (slowly) of printing off a hard copy on good paper. A terrific resource for this sort of thing.

White Spirits, source the unadulterated stuff. Here is the Aussie equivalent www.bunnings.com.au/diggers-1l-white-spirit-_p1563471Forget, and stay away from the all the other Goo's, I cannot guarantee White Spirits, but have been lifting my Aust self stick for 3 years with no apparent damage thus far. I have lifted US self stick as well, very successfully Long term effects are the only unknown Faced with your choice of irreperable damage, by using other means to separate, White Spirits would be my route.

You might want to give Super Safe Stamp Lift Fluid a try.

Ok, partial success. Found some Rosonol in a smoke shop in the concourse below work today at lunch. Tried it on the small section of strip. Did a bit of damage I'm afraid, before I figured out what I was doing. But I knew it would never be perfect. Going to wait to do the rest. Just this small bit in my unventilated studio has given me a bit of a head. The other bit is so large, I think I'll wait for better weather and do it out on the back deck. Not great, but it was on there with some serious glue!
