What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

A couple of big mixed lots have come my way via TSF live auctions, one from stoltzpup and one from firstfrog2013 (the FROG BOX). In addition, I had a batch of old Canada stamps sitting around and I've finally worked my way through the initial sort of much of it. I haven't been checking every last cancellation, but as they catch my eye, I've set aside any Canadian RPO cancellations. Here's a look at what I've found. Much of the fun involved is in trying to figure out what it is that I have - of course, cancellations aren't always fully socked on the nose, nor are they always clear, but there is only a limited amount of possibilities so I can use my literature to try to confirm the cancellation. My source is T.P.G. Shaw's Handbook & Catalogue of Canadian Transportation Postmarks. There's a large amount of info online for those who want it, you can look through past issues of the BNAPS RPO Study Group newsletters. The Shaw catalogue lists a rarity factor for each cancellation. You can use that to figure out a value for the cancellation. In general, you just multiply the catalogue value of the stamp by the rarity factor, and then multiply again by a "completeness" amount - if only 60% of the cancellation is showing, multiply the value by 60% accordingly. Med. Hat & Nel. R.P.O. (Medicine Hat, AB - Nelson, BC) - rarity factor 5 Riv. & Sask. R.P.O. (Rivers, MB - Saskatoon, SK) - rarity factor 30 Halifax & St. John M.C. (Halifax, NS - St. John, NB) - rarity factor 50 Hx, Dig. & Yar. R.P.O. (Halifax, NS - Digby, NS - Yarmouth, NS) - rarity factor 100 Que. & Campbellton Express (Quebec, QC - Campbellton, NB) - rarity factor 100 Tor. & Sar. M.C. (Toronto, ON - Sarnia, ON) - rarity factor 30 Tor. Strat. & Goderich R.P.O. (Toronto, ON - Stratford, ON - Goderich, ON) - rarity factor 10 O.L. & S. R.P.O. (Okanagan Landing, BC - Sicamous, BC) - rarity factor 100 Regina & Prince Albert R.P.O. (Regina, SK - Prince Albert, SK) - rarity factor 40 Edm. & Dawson Creek R.P.O. (Edmonton, AB - Dawson Creek, BC) - rarity factor 40 Toronto & North Bay R.P.O. (Toronto, ON - North Bay, ON) - rarity factor 5 Moncton & Camp. R.P.O. (Moncton, NB - Campbellton, NB) - rarity factor 100 Ryan

Ryan, Your 2nd 3c Jubillee may be worth a bit more as the 1st day of issue was June 19, 1897. You have a first week of issue postmark there of June 26, 1897.

[ADMIN Note: This post and the three that follow were moved from the Trains on Stamps thread.]
I don’t know exactly, but a big proportion of Swedish mail had railway cancellations, commonplace roughly 1880s to 1920, although this went on from 1860s to the 1960s. Other countries must do this, with distinctive railway route cancels. Belgium and Canada; absolutely. Any others?
Here are a couple new arrivals. The oldest showed the route, as in Gefle-Tierp. In the 1870s the post office began switching to standardized numerical designations, albeit meaning exactly the same thing. Here is one from 1894, PKXP 92 C, meaing Orsa-Gefle (Gävle).
Tierp is a village of about 6,000 forty-five minutes’ drive south of Gävle, home to Sweden’s best-known drag racing track! Orsa is more remote, very pretty. Linguists like its curious dialect. About 200 km west, so no telling where that stamp was going.

Great post @kasvik !!! However it should be in some Cancellation thread as a lot of members do not follow all the "Topical" threads (too many) and I still think they should be under a special thread to eliminate the quantities (my opinion)

Good thought. My sense of overall Forum geography remains poor.

Actually, for many, there is no Geography unless you read each time you post if there is a thread on the subject (not user friendly at times) but we do have a great Forum René

Whilst this stamp could have been added to the ' Postmark Calendar' thread given the postmark date or included in the ' Show your DIY album pages' let us use this opportunity to flush out some more of those RPO cancellations,
Have fun and happy collecting!
P.S. For those interested, this particular stamp is from plate 3-A-95 :-)

I took the opportunity to review the early postings by Ryan as I was curious to compare the rarity / scarcity factor for each cancellation between the Shaw & Gray catalogues,
For now, I am curious as to what the Shaw reference shows for the 'Galt & Elmira M.C.' postmark...
Have fun and happy collecting!
P.S. Where multiple hammers exist, e.g. 'Med. Hat & Nel. R.P.O.' with its two hammers, 'A-2', the lesser of the scarcity factors listed is shown pending a more thorough examination of the cancel.

For now, I am curious as to what the Shaw reference shows for the 'Galt & Elmira M.C.' postmark... With the M.C. included, the Galt & Elmira postmark has a rarity factor of 75 in the Shaw catalogue. The catalogue shows only "S" as the direction, however. If the M.C. is not included on the postmark, the rarity factor is 120 (and again, only "S" is listed for the direction). Ryan

Thanks Ryan for the additional information, much appreciated :-) If it were for the Shaw catalogue alone, I would happily proclaim a 'philatelic find' given the indicia on my example is a directional marker of 'N', but... the listing from the Gray reference shows indicium of 'N', 'S' & '2', have been found. Have fun and happy collecting! P.S. There is reference to a postmark where the M.C. is not included during the period of use, but only for one day and is listed with a rarity factor of 'G'; I suspect a unique occurrence.
