Just for fun tonight, after hours of TV with the missus, I reached into my hoard box of stamps (destined for other peoples collections) and randomly pulled out an envelope. **who says I don't know how to have a good time?**What did I find? Australian States, mainly Queensland. I was instantly taken by the variations on these Queen Vics.
The colour difference on the first two #66 (top left) is striking. The second one has a period after PENNY, which the first lacks. The 2 penny stamps in the top row are #85, both showing the characteristics of having been redrawn. Again, two different colours (gray blue/deep ultra). Sadly the #92 (top right) is damaged, but has a nice registered SON cancel. The second row, I don't know. I haven't checked for watermarks. Either #113 or #131. The first one has a lovely orange colour, though. Row 3, I've ID'd the first three as Type I (#114) and the the last two as Type III (#133). Again, variations in colour, and the first one on the left has quite a heavy outline around Her Majesty's head. The stamps in the last row just 'are'. But I'd never seen a #124 before. Seems quaintly crude in it's execution. I am amazed they continued to issue the Queen Vic's up until 1909. I know there was usually some overlap time, but this was just a year before the end of King Eddie's short reign. The guy couldn't catch break!

The bottom row, 2.1/2d I only ever recall seeing an octagonal Pmk before, once, on a 1935 Q'land exhib cancel. Yours is very peculiar. Sadly not enough info on the strike to identify it. Update. Found one on the internet : comments : "Brisbane Octagonal Postmark, not too hard to find" PS : I think I can see the "NE" of Brisbane.

Thanks James. All white Elephants, my thoughts were... 1. I have seen this type on ebay quoted as "severe re-entry" and had to see myself (top frame) This is just over inking. 2. On the 4d there is a variety "PENGE" for Pence, this looked similar, but don't you know it, often with Pmk ink, it can make things look differently. I think it is PENCE . (There is a fascinating "slot" in top LH side frame design though ) 3. Once again Pmk ink made it look like a cracked plate, but alas, no.

A true icon of British Empire Philately.....the Chalon Head !! One of my favourites too, it's just so hauntingly beautiful. A mix of early issues of Queensland, unsorted for anything just yet. That sorting still to come. Superb Printing by Perkins Bacon of London.

LondonBus1Thanks for bringing this 2016 thread back.......reading the thread in its entirety, I am wondering where these members are - I know for sure that Rod is on another Forum and very active and not a sophisticated person. He tells it like he sees it and has a very huge stamp collection - I have exchanged many stamps with him and still do. Too bad he is not with us - LIFE !!! René Tomorrow I am going to see what I have in inventory for Queensland......I know I have some in Sc # 85 up...pretty sure Rod or James have showed them in earlier posts !!

Queensland Sc 98 1p orange, Wmk 69, Perf 12 1/2 - no clue on the postmark with the "70" I would tend to think the postmark is actually an "OL". Not that it tells me what it means, Queensland is far away from my expertise!

In cases such as this, the retroReveal program can be helpful. This processed image clearly shows the tail of the Q.

I too love the Chalon heads but missed a chance to own some.
There were some for sale on eBay.in but unfortunately the website has been closed down.
Hoping that flipkart opens the new website soon

I know you are selling - but hope you are keeping those If I decide to keep a small part for myself, Queensland will be high on the list of possibilities. But I have not yet decided. Yes, the Chalon Heads are just the best. There are a lot of Queensland stamps in this collection so it would be a good part to keep.

Error in Registered Postmark Hammer "THORGOMINDAH" is in error, Genuine = "THARGOMINDAH" Aboriginal word meaning "Cloud of Dust" or "Echidna" The tyranny of distance of Thargomindah. link
