We've all seen cheques (checks) with revenue stamps. To help finance the Civil War, President Lincoln signed in to law the Act of July 1, 1862 Which created the Office of the Internal Revenue within the Treasury, and established a series of taxes which spawned the many adhesive revenue, tax paid, proprietary, document stamps collectors now enjoy. Another method of showing payment of these taxes were stamps printed directly on the paper (i.e., the cheques, insurance policies, bonds, stock certificates etc.), called Revenue Stamped Paper. Here's an 1881 check (I'll use the US spelling) from the Cumberland National Bank in Bridgeton New Jersey. The two cent stamp can be seen in the centre of the check picturing Lady Liberty. These are listed in Scotts Specialized Catalogue under Revenue Stamped Paper. This design is listed as RN-G1
