Law stamps were used on court and legal documents. The provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan all issued law stamps of similar design. British Columbia 1888-1891 Second Series # BCL5 (van Dam)

Not being Canadian, I'm going to take my best shot at explaining the three common overprints on Upper Canada law stamps.
The C.F. overprint was for the Consolidated Fund; the F.F. overprint was for the Fee Fund; and the L.S. overprint was for the Law Society. (The L.C. overprint was for an entirely different region, Lower Canada.)
C.F. was used in the more-important (Superior) courts and F.F. was used in the lower courts. L.S. was used to repay a debt to the Law Society, which had financed the construction of the court complex in Toronto. Certain court tasks, along with admission to the bar, required payment of "L.S." fees.
As for Upper Canada and Lower Canada, I believe the designations are in relation to the St. Lawrence River, Upper Canada being upriver, closer to the headwaters.
As soon as our neighbors to the north stop laughing at the above and regain their composure, perhaps one of them will correct any wildly inaccurate information.

No is laughing, cjd (shhhh...shhhhh! quiet over there!) I believe your info is correct.
And as to the Upper and Lower Canada designations, you are also correct. Certainly the early explorers paddling their canoes upstream all that way were pretty certain which was higher.
And to this day the law society here in Ontario is still called the Law Society of Upper Canada. Guess they didn't want to change all that stationary.

I thought, how can it be that there are no Yukon law stamps shown here? And then it hit me, this thread is for provincial law stamps. I hope no one minds a couple territorial law stamps slipped in. Here are 50-cent and $1 Yukon Territorial Court Law Stamps, each with a CANCELLED puncture. Pretty nice production values, eh? From the listings I've seen online, it looks like the punctures come in large and, later, small sizes. These look to be large. Anyone with more specific information can pipe up. edited to add that I have these as YL9 and YL10, respectively.

Cjd, the answer is actually because I just don't have any. Some day...some day...
But those are nice.

Hi Steve Regarding the Manitoba stamp from the UK, I'd say it's exactly like the one i posted six years ago, except better centred!
Manitoba 1892 nine scallops VanDam #ML107 Value in the 2009 Catalogue (I don't have the new edition) is $2 used. While mine is canceled with perforated letters CANCELED, the UK version was canceled using what looks possibly like a purple date stamp. Again, these were used on court and legal documents.

Some law stamp additions from todays journey to an antique market. Some condition issues, but had at a good price, so I'm happy. Ontario 1864 #OL3 (same as cjd's shown above) Quebec 1864 QL5 Saskatchewan 1907 SL3 Yukon 1902 YL8 YL9 and YL10 (the day has come cjd!) And just for good measure, though not provincial... Canada 1915 FSC17

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

The last of the items worth sharing from the mail this week were these 1864 Law Stamps. 3 are from Ontario and the one on the far right is from Quebec (L.C. for Lower Canada). I have just started to add some revenue stamps to my collection when I see them at reasonable price. These were bought for pocket change that came with about 10 other lots from one eBay seller's weekly auction. I like the Aesthetic designs of this era.

Let me first say, what I don't know about law stamps could fill a room. This stamp came to me as 11x11x11x 5.5 perf, but the bottom perf is uneven. I do not have a Van Dam Cat so not sure if it is listed. If any one has an opinion I would welcome it!

As 5.5 is half of 11, my first thought is that this is an victim of some missing perforations

(Blind Perfs) As an aside, and under "one good turn, deserves another" if you send me your email I can send you FREE a Van Dam Catalogue (I have 2) early though (25th anniv edition) Cheers Rod

I was able to add 3 more of these 1864 (pre confederation) Ontario Law Stamps to the small accumulation I already had. The C.F. stands for consolidated fund. I was suspect that the $1.00 was damaged when I saw the photos of the lot due to a few flat hinges on the back so no surprise to find a tear. The SON cancel makes it worth keeping for now. Just love the designs of these.

The Halifax Law Library stamps first came into use in 1879 and have been used on various types of legal documents right through to the 1990's. They began to have overprints in 1955. This is the first one in my collection and it is actually a rather scarce 1993 never hinged example missing a red 3.00 overprint. The van Dam number is NSF13a.
