At my local stamp club (RPSC 191 Owen Sound) meeting last night we had a guest speaker from the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation. Mr. Garfield Portch, who is the Vice President of the Foundation did an excellent presentation about exactly what the Foundation is about, the research library, and how they go about expertising the stamps that are submitted to them and the equipment they use to do that. The main piece of equipment is a $100 000.00 Foster & Freeman VSC6000 Video Spectral Comparator. Heck of mouthful but the examples he showed us of just what the machine could do was amazing. Very, very cool. If you get a chance to hear one of his presentations, take it, very well worthwhile. Mr. Portch is an excellent speaker and really knows his stuff. Here's the link to their site if you want to read a little more about them. www.greenefoundation.ca/index.htmlRick

Mr Portch spoke at our club (Barrie) this year as well. Very interesting stuff indeed.

If he sees this post then he will realize just how much his presentation was appreciated. Doubly so as it is a long drive for him to and from our little club. We had invited both the Saugeen (Hanover) and Kincardine clubs to join us but unfortunately we didn't get the hoped for turnout. Rick

Hi Guys:
Thanks for your kind words about my presentation. In the last 12 months I have had the pleasure of addressing 17 stamp clubs in and around Southern Ontario. It has been a lot of fun and is really a pleasure to have a short time to interact with so many avid stamp collectors. It is most rewarding (personally) to read and hear your comments because it confirms my general impression that the effort is worthwhile.
I do appreciate the invitations to visit the clubs and the opportunity to tell the story about the Greene Foundation.
Best wishes to all.

GJP,
Have you considered preparing an online version of your presentation that could be shared with groups such as ours?

VGG from all I have read is one of the best services bar none. I like that they zre using science as well as history and knowledge and are willing to go the extra mile for the sake of the hobby. On top of that being availiable on forums like this to help out is an added bonus.

Forum members, I am flattered that you have asked for an online version of my presentation, but I am sorry to state that it just wouldn't work. Between the Smithsonian and the twenty or so clubs I have visited, the presentation has changed every time. There is constant updating with new discoveries and exciting philatelic find that I amend my presentation 'on the fly' as a reaction to my audience. A significant portion of the presentation comes from the interaction with the audience and that cannot be predicted or duplicated.
At the Greene Foundation, we recognize that an online presence is going to play an important role in our future. To that end, we are in the process of building a number of presentations to document some of the research work being done. There is still a great deal of work to be done before we present any of this stuff online so we are still a few months off. I will be sure to post notices on this forum when we do go live.
