Great Britain: 1828 Stampless Folded Letter (Rochester Postmark)Not one of my typical collecting areas but interesting none the less. I haven't attempted to decipher the letter as yet but love the Rochester JA 7 1828 postmark. If anyone has any tidbits of info, please add.

I posted this in the UK forum thinking that this Rochester was in England where the link above refers to Rochester NY. Based on the front appearing to read "at Lady Hastings-- Trent. A google search for Lady Hastings brought up quite a scandal around the young Queen Victoria that would fall into this time period. However the first page of this letter is from a Husband to his Wife . I will continue reading the rest but does not seem to be relevant to the royal scandal of the time. Quick google search for Rochester Uk postmarks didn't find much other than Rochester was in Kent and not Trent. More confused but also curious now.

Looks like "at Lady Hastey's" or "Hartey's" perhaps. I do see "Trent" and maybe "near Sunbridge Rolls" ... ?

Looking at this cover shows that the "Rochester 29" is a mileage mark... postage was calculated by the distance carried. The manuscript "6" also verifies that the letter was costed at sixpence which was the single letter rate for between 20 and 30 miles at that time (one more mile and it would have been seven pence). The letter went originally to Rochester but was re-addresssed to Tunbridge Wells and charged another "6" (sixpence) as that was within the 20-30 mile band also.

Thought I would add this to the thread.
It has a reciving cancel for Rochester but I still working on the other cancel, it looks like July 29th with an O. Unfortunate that this is just a shard of a letter would love to find out where it was posted from nice couple of MX cancels
