Today is President James Buchanan's birthday and, consistent with tradition and a presidential directive, a wreath was placed on his monument, complete with a color guard and a general giving a speech. B uchanan's house, Wheatland, is just a block down the road from where I live. This year I was asked to give the invocation and benediction. So I prayed... Lord of all, creator of this good earth and our Maker; we give you thanks for public servants who elicit greatness from humanity and who delight in the noise of democracy, especially for President James Buchanan and First Lady Harriet Lane whom we remember today, and for all Presidents and First Ladies of these United States of America. Look with favor on their legacies, forgive their failures and magnify their good works. Let their love of nation refine our guardianship of the birthright they have bestowed upon us. Complete in us, we pray, and in all generations that follow, their dreams of a more perfect world where your love and peace reign, forever. Amen. Buchanan is not counted among the great presidents. Circumstances preceding the Civil War and his inability to deal with them helpfully have tainted his reputation. Yet those who spoke today found some good things to say about him.

James Buchanan wasn't so bad. There is always the Millard Fillmore Society, propping up one of our least "great" presidents.

This is the perfect opportunity to share one of my favorite songs by They Might be Giants: James K. Polk

Buchanan on his 1957 version of H.E. Harris' Presidents of the United States labels. His 1961 edition was green with purple lettering. Trés chic!

I doubt anyone could have successfully navigated the events that were happening in the country during that time.
What a beautiful house Wheatland is. It looks like a great place to visit.
