I have been listening to a lot of Richard Dawkins books and debates on Evolution etc. I want to combine this interest with my interest in stamps, so... I am going to try to alter the pic below ...so that it will accommodate stamps illustrating the different organisms mentioned. Where I cannot find a stamp for some (many) I will devise some sort of Cindy. First, I need to figure out how big it should be... an idea that has been suggested by Tony is: "you will need to consider making it in a concertina page style like the old story books. That way you would not have to cramp things." Any other suggestions?

It's an interesting graphics question. As an alternative to Tony's suggestion, you might think of a scroll. Does papyrus show up on the graphic?
Or, if you want an album, you might put the graphic on the top (or bottom)of every page with an arrow pointing to the part of it that the stamps on the same page illustrate. This would yield a whole page, say, of fungi stamps with an arrow pointing to the word fungi on the graphic. Or, you might put only the relevant section of the graphic on each page.
Or, you could blow it up and paste the whole thing on a wall -- wallpaper style. Use it as a party game, giving each guest 25 or so stamps to lick and stick. Throw in a few presidential and rock star stamps; see if your guests place them higher than protozoa.

Philately is going where no man has gone before And thanks, I have been waiting 25 years to be able to put periplus in a sentence.

The concertina idea proved to be a bit clumsy, I agree with the suggestion of a dedicated album...but it lacks a bit of flare and unusualness... So far, using MSPublisher I have come up with this idea: ...each one of those rectangles is an A4 page! I decided on the size according with the largest table I have...60" x 36" approx.

In a practical sense, I would see a linear graph, starting with earth birth, and descending down through the pages, top to bottom, as the ages develop. Would give you space to include thumbnails, include branches, to edit to include species, and read practically sheet 1 through > ? You may be surprised just how many appear on stamps, for example the Australia set "slime" for the earliest sea life that moved to feed.

Yes I agree that the way you describe it would be a lot more sensible and useful, but it would be very similar to an album, which I was trying to get away from...lol i wanted to go for something spectacular. But it may prove to be too impractical

Still, it does not hurt to think about it some more...another possibility (copied from an excellent site called DCStamps ) is to collect the stamps in stock sheets and then construct a virtual chart placing the images (or better thumbnails) of the stamps in their places. It would save a lot of paper & ink and would be easy to improve and add to etc.

Actually Philatarium started the ball rolling, by using the word "peripatetia". Things went from there, and I have a new appreciation of the prefix "Peri" (around or about) eg Peri-meter Peri-scope etc & etc

What a cool idea for a project.
I like the idea of a virtual collection like the DCStamp site. Gives you a lot more flexibility while designing and you can always commit it to paper later if you want.
Are you just going to stick with trying to find stamps within a certain band (say 65 millions years ago to today) or any time period? Either way quite a challenge, but sounds like a lot of fun.

Good question, Jen B! At the moment I am thinking that I will try to find stamps that apply to all if not most of the present day organisms, those will go at the top. With respect to earlier species, most will be hard to find, except for dinosaurs, there will be lots of those - I think that almost every country in the world has issued dinosaur stamps! As you can see I am still working on the idea and the final result may not even resemble these first musings, still I really would like to combine the two: Evolution and stamps.

More for "The Stamp Forum" wordsmiths, regarding our prefix "Peri".
Odontometer = Perforation guage "odontos" =tooth, metron= to measure
Peri-odontist = "around" the tooth (Periodontist a dental specialist)
