While working through some Argentina I came across this stamp that I can't find anything about. Does anyone know what type of issue this is? Google translates Inscripcion Escolar as School Enrollment. So I'm thinking this might be some type of revenue stamp. Maybe for some fee for enrolling in school in Buenos Aires? Thanks!

Hi Jen
It looks like a revenue, especially with the control number at the bottom, and would not be listed in Scott.
By the way, I made your CD and just have to pack it and send. I could not believe how hard it is to find CD-R or CD-RW. It seems that everything is DVD something.

Any guesses as to the portrait? Belgrano? Rivadavia? San Martin?

Wow! Superb searching to find that site. It is the same stamp, sans the year and serial number. To me the person on the stamp resembles Bernardino Rivadavia (the first president of Arentina). The stamp looks like it might be based on this picture of Rivadavia. Jerry B - Many thanks for sending the CD! Your tables on Argentina have been a fantastic resource and time saver. I'm positive the others will be a big help as well.

I've received some additional information on this stamp from the fellow that created the website Rod222 found.
He said the these type of stamps were used for school matriculation. The fee was annual and there is one stamp per year from the 1920s through the 1930s. The stamp would be affixed to the qualification forms for the student. In Argentina these are called "boletines escolares". In the U.S. we call them "report cards".

You received a "Like it" from Kim, (khj) and he is an Argentine specialist, if I recall.

It was very nice of the website owner to reply to me.. particularly since I don't know Spanish and used Google Translate to send the email. Was worried that I would offend them with my bad Google Spanish.

Rod, actually Rubiera is the guy who is one of the Argentine specialists. I can only dream of being one. I haven't run into him in awhile. He had that great thread on a few other sites on the many watermark/paper/printing varieties of those "common" definitives and BOB issues. Last time I checked with him, he was compiling it all into distributable files.
I had seen the stamp/link before, but was not aware of the stamp background other than it had something to do with education -- didn't really want to post any wild guesses. Glad you posted the link and Jen B. took the initiative to ask the website owner!
Well done, both of you! (actually, I had forgotten to "like" Rod's post, too! Now done!)

If you like to look at common stamps looking for production details, then this info will keep you busy for a long time. www.somestamps.com/publications/publications.htmRyan

Yes, those are Antonio's pdf's that he had been compiling -- the same ones I have. He hasn't added onto them in a few years and I don't know why. I elected not to post the link because I wasn't sure of the link posting rules here. So thanks for posting the link Ryan. His work is fantastic.

Here's another Argentine revenue stamps that I came across. This one from the province of Santa Fe. Wasn't able to find any info on this one on the web. Did find out that Clive Akerman authored what is considered the definitive work on Argentina revenues. He published six volumes on the subject. One is for sale on Amazon for $353.

I'm just starting my first revenue collection - Irish ones - and I'm hooked! Fascinating collecting area. I am beginning to understand how they could result in a six volume work. Wasn't there a marijuana revenue stamp - in Texas perhaps - that was crazy expensive?

Which accentuates my appreciation of collectors whom produce catalogues for free, that is an extraordinary show of generosity, to propagate the study of stamps, as in the catalogues recently offered to me on Indonesia Japanese Occupation, and Maluku Selatan. Nice little set of pages. Thanks for posting the link. The site mentions that Argentina has issued over 100,000 revenue stamps. No wonder Mr. Akerman's undertaking extended to 6 volumes!
