Thanks Michael. I was assuming the thread just to be centred on the Penny Black, Genuine and Cinderella. as I was also assuming Rolinda would be posting some of her genuine stamps. If you think these are not suitable for this thread give us a nudge, and I'll delete the post. 22 Carat Gold Penny Black Minted : 3000 Circa August 1973 #1 of the minting held in the British National Postal Museum

Not sure where to place this post, this is not really a cinderella, nor a postage stamp, or is it ? I'll let moderators decide.

Definitely a Cinderella that last one...although it does depend on one's point of view. Either way, it's staying put ! Here's a couple of items issued for StampWorld London '90, Alexandra Palace, London. Part of a series. Both items were printed using the original dies. Must be more around somewhere......

A popular sheet issued, together with a 2d Blue version, to celebrate the 27th Philatelic Congress of Great Briatin in 1940. Congress was held alongside a Centenary Exhibition having moved from it's original venue due to the War. A rather odd-looking reproduction !

Here's one from a Philatelic Expo held in Rome in 1985. ...and here's a Penny Black turned Blue to advertise Mrs Stewart's Bluing, one of a number of sheets in the series.

An advertising label for Stampshow 2000 at Earl's Coutr, London by dealers Rushstamps. Another pre-show advertising label for Stampex, 1957.

Apart from the one shown by Rolinda in the opening post, many other Penny Black souvenirs exist from the USA. Most of them are from the Centenary Year 1940 when over 80 sheets were produced by Clubs, Bourses and Exhibition organizers. [If my information is correct then 80 is on the low side]. The reproductions range from very good to just plain funny, but all are very collectable and make a very worthwhile sideline Cinderella collection. Here are a few. The one below , like the one in Rolinda's initial post, is from the Kenmore Stamp Company. Note the corner letters ?!! One of the better reproductions I have seen is on this Dinner Invitation for the Twin City Philatelic Society who celebrated the special occasion on May 6th !! I wonder if 'No.2' was for someone important ? More to come.... Londonbus1

The label seen previously by UK dealer Rushstamps most likely derived from the original pre-show publicity labels which can be seen below. It shows the official show logo and no doubt the aforementioned dealers needed permission to use the design for their own advertising. Note the corner letters on the Penny Black reproduction, RM for Royal Mail, the main sponsors. These labels have rounded corners and are self-adhesive. Issued in panes of 15 from sheets of 60 with 'margins' all round.

LB, I'm always stunned by both the breadth and depth of the items you show! (With you, Rodney, and James, I experience extended periods of severe cinderella envy. -- I don't know where you all manage to find this stuff.)

LB, I'm always stunned by both the breadth and depth of the items you show! (With you, Rodney, and James, I experience extended periods of severe cinderella envy. -- I don't know where you all manage to find this stuff.) -- Dave There's more, there's more ! A lot of the US material I found by chance at the Strand Stamp fair in London two years ago. A dealer was disposing of a Penny Black collection of both postage and Cinderella stamps and I blew my budget at this one table !! I had to pass up on a lot of stuff. When I enquired by email some months later if any items remained he told me the bad news ! Some of the stuff was way out of my price range. To celebrate this public Tete-a-tete, here are some more ! First up was the most costly item I procurred from the dealer. A very interesting piece consisting of a letter from the President of the Glen Ellyn Philatelic Club, Chicago, Illinois. Mr Frank Hayworth, one of the 5 founding members from 1937 had attached to the letter a very interesting Cinderella which celebrated not only the PB Centenary but also the old and more modern methods of transportation [for the mail we should presume !]. I have seen the same design in another format but was outbid by a country mile. The call to the fledgling club's first meeting of the season included a sweetener of 1,000 free stamps !! www.glenellynstampclub.org/index.htmlMore Centenary celebrations......... This one was based on the Wyon idea....... Finally for this post, a very extravagant and large Souvenir sheet from the Centennial Stamp Exhibition, Buffalo,NY in May 1940. Unusually the names of [presumably] show sponsors are included. It does not show up well on the screen but it is a truly magnificent piece. Londonbus1....dreaming of Vicky !

I haven't yet decided if these are small Perfed and Imperf Miniature sheets or if they are large Perfed and Imperf labels. The story behind these was told in an earlier post in this topic (scroll back).

Now that the mystery has been solved, I'll put this one into a more meaningful thread . A letter sent by a Mr.A.Walker of Glasgow, Scotland to the now defunct British Magazine, Stamp Collecting in December 1973 in reply to a query in a previous issue appears to have solved what was, apparently, a long-standing mystery. The writer's Brother, James produced these privately in 1939 as Christmas Gifts to his Philatelic Friends. He did all the work himself including the etching of the copper plates and the Printing. He did the actual inking with his finger !! Printed in Photogravure. Number of copies is not known. It had made this item from the Mystery of some years into something rather special, even if it is not an Exhibition item as first assumed. At least it did make it into the Catalogue !!! I was surprised to read in londonbus1's earlier post that at least 80 cinderellas had been issued by U.S. stamp organizations for the 1940 Penny Black centenary. I looked through my collection and found, sure enough, I had far more of these than I thought. Following is what I found in my collection. I took the liberty of including a couple of sheets at the end that celebrate the centenary, but do not feature an image of the Penny Black. Most of the stamp clubs that produced issues for the centenary are still in existence today.
There is a terrific article entitled, "More Cinderellas of the Penny Black Centenary," by Wes Shellen at www.stampsonstamps.org/Articles9.htm . It includes a list of souvenir sheets issued in the U.S. for the Penny Black centenary compiled by a collector named S. A. Garnett.

Another for the topic from St. Teresas (sic) Stamp Club. It doesn't include a location, but I think it is in England.
Well - if I had looked at the list in my last post more carefully, I would have found the answer. It identifies the St. Teresa's Stamp Club as being in Brooklyn, N.Y.

'Philately's Oldest Friend' !! I have a similar print by Harry Peckmore, without the text. This engraving is actually much larger than the actual stamp; I've included a real stamp for scale.

It appears that my original post on this thread, from 2014, has fallen off, and is probably lying on the floor somewhere. I know it was there because Rod responded to it, and I responded to his response. Whew! So, I'll replace images and add a few more. Penny Black facsimile that Mr Bus posted. In fact, I got this from him! cinderella (also posted up there by the Bus) from Mrs. Stewarts Bluing labels odd gold trimmed pair which turned out to be cut out of a Russian souvenir sheet label from 1947 SCA Exhibition souvenir sheet from 1954 National Stamp Exhibition in Westminster souvenir sheet from 1950 London International Stamp Exhibition souvenir sheet from Burgard Vocational High School Stamp Club, Buffalo NY 1940

I collect Mrs Stewart's Bluing cinderella sheets and thought I had them all until I learned that there are printing varieties on a couple of the sheets. One variety is on the 1940 sheet depicting famous women that includes Queen Victoria on the penny black. The variety on this sheet is in the printing of the penny black stamp. On one sheet the color is appropriately black while on the other it is blue. I don't know which is the scarcer of the two varieties other than to say I see more of the blue penny black offered than the black. Sellers don't seem to be aware of the variety and I have never seen it mentioned in a seller's description. Consequently, there is currently no price differential for either of the varieties. My two sheets are posted below. Don StampHinger The "black" penny black sheet The "blue" penny black sheet

Shown also in another topic but worthy of an entry here ? You decide ! "This is a Proof Sheet for the 1940 Penny Black Souvenir sheet which was sold by the organizers of the Adhesive Stamp Exhibition, held at the Bournemouth Pavilion from May 6th-14th. The Exhibition followed on from the British Philatelic Congress held at the Royal Bath Hotel, Bournemouth from May 3rd-6th. The Congress souvenir sheet also featured a Penny Black reproduction and to save money during wartime, the same plate was used. Both events were organized by the Postal History Society-President Mr.Robson Lowe !" Probably but not definitely by Waterlow. Scarce, or at least I rarely see one come up for sale. Someone else here has one because I sold it to him !!! I just love this sheet. Londonbus1
