On this day 100 years ago the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Duchess Sophia were shot in Sarajevo by a young Bosnian national, Gavrilo Princip. A statue has recently been erected to Princip in Sarajeva where he's hailed as a hero. Here are two of the three stamps issued to commemorate the assassination and help raise money for a memorial church in the town. I'll find the third eventually.
There's a terrific article in todays Toronto Star about Princip and the day of the assassination, which led to, though, of course, was not the only cause of, the First World War. www.thestar.com/news/insight/2014/06/28/how_an_archduke_met_an_assassin_on_a_sarajevo_street.html//
