Here's an interesting one. Almost 100 years old and still looks post office fresh. These were sold for 1 kopeck over face value. The surtax was donated to charities connected with the first world war.

1905 B1-B4 Sold for 3 kopecks over face value to aid the orphans and widows of soldiers in the Russo-Japanese war. Some rare perf 13.5 X 11.5 are quite valuable. The 11.5X13.5 may not exist according to some experts. This series is apparently free of forgeries The initials of the engraver P.Z. or R.Z. can be found somewhere in the designs (except the 3 kopecks) Apparently, only 50,000 rubles or $25,000 was raised from the sale of these stamps. Strip of 8 stamps overprinted with the word "O B R A Z E T S" - the 4 values have this variety "Broken Wall" variety

B31 B32 B33 1924 B44 "S.S.S.R. For the sufferers by the inundation at Leningrad." 19254 B47 "S.S.S.R. For the Leningrad Proletariat, 23, IX, 1924."
