This label was sold in 1916 to provide funding for the Bombay Presidency War & Relief Fund. The name referenced on top, Lady Willingdon, was the wife of the Governor of Bombay at the time, Freeman Freeman-Thomas. He was later the Governor General of Canada, and later still the Viceroy of India. He was eventually given the title of Marquess, and according to his Wikipedia page he is the last person to have been promoted to this rank. A very large wig, in other words. You will also notice an image of this label on his Wikipedia page. Ryan

Here's another early charity label from India, this one from 1917. The "Our Day" fundraising effort was overseen by the British Red Cross and was an international effort held in many countries but it was particularly successful in India. According to this article (in the "Flag Day" section, it's a rather long piece), Our Day collections totalled over £25 million by the end of World War I, or roughly £1.75 billion by today's values. This could have gone into the Flags topic where it sits in my Stamp cupboard. But I thought I'd give India an airing !!! Is that a '2' after 'Dewas' ? does it denote the 2nd Raja of Dewas back in the 18th Century ? And it could be that the left Flag is not correct too ! The right Flag is a double Pennant type for Dewas State Senior, but the left Flag should then be rectangular (2:3) for Dewas State Junior ! Or maybe I am totally incorrect. Maybe one of our Indian Members can enlighten me/us ? Dewas State was formed in 1728 and made up of 2 Princely States. A British Protectorate from 1818, today part of the State of Madhya Pradesh. I wonder of there are other similar labels out there for the other Maharajas ?

A nice sheet from Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department to celebrate the Indian Telegraph Centenary in 1951 depicting Victorian and Edwardian telegraph stamps.

Shree Shree Raj Rajeshwari Mata This interesting stamp seems to relates to the Hindu Temple in Konnagar, West Bengal, India. From a set of, possibly, 6 stamps. Their purpose is unclear but possibly some type of receipt stamp. The Naye Paisa currency was in use from 1957-1963.
