Can't find these handsome devils in the catalogue. Google translates as 'state telegraph'. [BROKEN IMAGE LINK(S) REMOVED]

Thanks for making "The Stamp Forum" a more organised place Here is CHILE information, by our own "The Stamp Forum" member, Blair, about 7 years ago........ (some of the links may now be invalid) Hello again. A Telegraphos from Chile that I can't find a number for: cjoint.com/data/fqnIHomaMO.htmIt seems to fit the description in Scotts - Chile - A13, without the overprint. Scotts gave a number to similar stamps in other countries - Portugal, Cuba for example, but I can't find anything in the Chile listings. Thanks! Jack Hello Jack: This is a telegraph stamp (basically a type of Revenue stamp for a fee paid on telegrams) . It was not valid for postage, so Scott will not list it. Here is an article from Linn's in 2003 about telegraph stamps: www.linns.com/howto/refresher/theroad_20031013/refreshercourse.aspIn some countries, such stamps were also valid for postage of letters. In such cases, Scott WILL list them. They are sometimes known as postal-fiscals. An interesting summary of the history of the telegraph in Chile (first in South America) can be found on page 3 of the following document: www.ieee.org/organizations/history_center/cht_papers/Carvallo-Fernandini.pdfIn 1904, some Chilean telegraph stamps were OVERPRINTED "correos", across the top, and used for postage. If you look at Chile Scott #59, you will see your telegraph stamp, but with the postal overprint. The catalogue value of #59 is 0.25 mint 0.20 used. There is also a specialized catalogue for Chile, called the Heise colour catalogue. The last edition that I know of is 2002/3 (price £25.00), but I do not know if it covers revenue and telegraph stamps, or just postage stamps. I hope that this has been helpful. Blair (TC) Hi Scott's catalogs do not list non-US telegraph stamps. The one you illustrated was issued in 1893 as part of a set of 6 ranging from 2c to 10 P for the large size perf 12 and in 1894 as a set of 5 ranging from 2c to 1 P for a small size, perf 11. Yvert et Tellier catalogues are better for world wide telegraphs. Art

Well, don't I feel stoopid! Thanks for setting me straight Rod. Sometimes I can't read what's in front of me. I'll change the title and hopefully our Admin gurus can move the thread to the proper area.

You merely crossed named, possibly in your speed to post, you named your Chile, "Colombia", and your Colombia, "Chile" easy enough to do. Kudos to you for posting, and showing interesting material.

Reviving this old thread as I just found the three 1st telegraph stamps of Chile in one of my books and I have to say I rather like them. Michel # 1 - 3, 1891:

Nice set spain1850! It looks like I have the 20c on blued paper from your set. It's also nice to see that there are more than are listed in my Michel catalog, which just lists 4 stamps and claims they're from 1891:

cjoprey, I'd say yours is the bluish paper as well. Here is the reference I used for making my page: gb-precancels.org/Telegraphs/World/Chile.htmlIt looks like both sources may be right. The first set was issued in 1883, for telegraph purposes. But, in 1891 the 2c thru 1p were also made available for postal use. I'm willing to bet that is what the notes beneath the listing in your picture is referring to. I don't have any experience with German, however, so can't confirm.

Thanks for the link spain1850 - it would appear all of mine have the telegraph cancel on them with the star in the centre.

Spain 1850 is quite right:
The Michel-notes read:
The header: Telegraph Stamps, also used as Postage Stamps
Prices: mint / postal cancellation / telegraph cancellation
Footnotes:
MiNr.3 unused often is (found) regummed MiNr.1-3 were used only in places of the northern provinces from April 21st till September 30th,1891. MiNr.4 presumably was never used for regular-letter-mail. (meaning:excists philatelicly used and c.t.o. only)
(sign for cancel-forgeries) Expertising advisable.
