What is the difference between the Scott catalog and the Stanley Gibbons catalog? Which is more recognized or more respected in the hobby? Also, what are CTO stamps that I have seen reference to? Thanks again for any help. Robert

The Scott is published in the U.S., while Stanley Gibbons is published in Britain. Both are respected, but have different strengths. Almost all U.S. based collectors use Scott. Most British Commonwealth based collectors use Stanley Gibbons. You forgot to mention the Michel (German) catalogues, which some say are the "most respected" of all.

CTO=canceled to order. The issuing government cancels the stamps then sells them to a stamp dealer, usually at a discount although not always (e.g., League of Nations Stamps in the 1920s and 30s). So they are unused for postage but canceled stamps.

Thanks for the info. I did forget the Michel catalogs. I guess I will stick with my 2009 Scott's.
CTO's - I guess these would be some of the stamps I have from the 1970's with full gum but with a cancellation in one of the corners.......kind of like one cancel would hit four stamps in a block.
Thanks again, Robert

Thanks again for any help. Robert I jumped ship from Stanley Gibbons after 10 years, and followed Scott. My collecting enjoyment was raised 100% Using Scott, try and source the 2009 edition on CD if possible, it's worth its weight in gold. I still employ Gibbons for GB and India. Mr. Bill Steiner offers entire world stamp album pages for circa $39 His pages follow the Scott catalogue, and marrying the two, can get a new collection up and running in a trice, it looks good and feels good, and gets organisation happening in a flash, you print just the pages that match the stamps you have.

WOW Nice informative article. Now I know more about CTO's. However, the article said that Spain issued CTO's from 1854 to 1882. Is that accurate? That seems a little early as stamp collecting was probably in the early stages of people collecting. I can see them being issued in the 1910's and onward but not that early. But again, what do I know................................
Thanks again,
Robert
