Was the $10 catalog value on the 40c New Zealand before or after applicaton of the backstamp? While not all-inclusive, this site describes a number of expert markings found on the backs of stamps.

Here's one. Switzerland 1900 UPU Allegory issue. SC #99. Errington & Martin are in the list at the website tomiseksj linked to. They are listed as stamp dealers. I remember searching around for info on this when I came across it, and found that stamping advertisements like this was common with some stamp dealers back then.

I had a friend in high school who wore a shirt that read 'Jesus Saves. Moses Invests'.
I thought it was funny. Don't think it said anything on the back though.

Errington and Martin were the chief abusers, they really should have known better. The springback "Albion" postage stamp album, produced by Errington and Martin.

A Two for One! Identify the Country and Issue.....and Translate the Latin. Jim, do you have an image (up close) of Sc#132 of Portugal? Would like to see it. (Designed by Senor Ramalho and Engraved on Wood by Senor M. D. Netto , printed at the Mint, Lisbon)

Rod- You are right, it is toned, but here it is..... As you probably know, the #132 2 1/2r black "St. Anthony and His Vision" was typographed, while the other fourteen stamps in the issue were lithographed. I think it is the nicest of the issue.

Eulogy attempt
O blessed tongue ! that always blessed the Lord, and made others bless and praise Him; it is now manifest what great merits thou dost possess in the sight of God.
(Bonaventure opened the grave of St Anthony 32 years after passing, and apparently his tongue was as red as when interred...hence the reference to the tongue)

How about the New Zealand issues with ads printed on the backs? The recent Auckland City Stamps auction had a huge number of these stamps up for bidding - a collector had attempted to reconstruct entire sheets of these stamps, and his collection of over 7000 stamps was put up for auction. It received some newspaper coverage in the New Zealand Herald in advance of the auction, nice to see the Fourth Estate paying some attention to those of us who gather these little bits of paper. Ryan

After almost a year of inactivity, it is time to get back to "backs." Sweden's numeral type issues of 1886 to 1891 had a post horn on there backs. Shown below is the 20 ore vermillion stamp from that issue (Scott 46).

USSR 1938 - damaged stamp, but has some value as curious. I think this stamp has been glued on stamp or envelope from Poland after september of 1939.
