From James auction lot which arrived today..Thank James. 1981 The Battle of Jersey The Death of Major Peirson. (Copley) wiki The Death of Major Peirson, 6 January 1781 is a 1783 large oil painting by John Singleton Copley. It depicts the death of Major Francis Peirson at the Battle of Jersey on 6 January 1781. The Battle of Jersey was the last French attempt to seize the island of Jersey, and one of the last battles with invading forces from a foreign nation in the British Isles.[Note 1] The invasion was organised privately by Baron Philippe de Rullecourt but funded and supplied by the French government, and was intended to remove the threat that British naval vessel based in Jersey posed to American ships in the American Revolutionary War. Approximately 1,000 French soldiers, commanded by de Rullecourt and an Indian, Mir Sayyad, landed at La Rocque, Grouville, overnight on 5–6 January. They occupied St Helier early on the morning of 6 January. They captured the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey Moses Corbet, in bed. Although he surrendered, Peirson, the 24-year-old commander of around 2,000 troops of the British garrison, refused to surrender. As Peirson organised a counter-attack, a French shot killed him. Lieutenant Philippe Dumaresq of the Jersey militia took command of the British forces, which comprised detachments of the 95th Regiment of Foot, 78th Highlanders, and Jersey Militia. The British forces quickly overwhelmed the French, most of whom surrendered. John Boydell, a successful engraver and publisher and Aldermen of the City of London, commissioned Copley to paint a large 251.5 centimetres (99.0 in) by 365.8 centimetres (144.0 in), painting. The scene looks towards the final French resistance in Royal Square, viewed along what is now Peirson Place, with the French soldiers taking their last stand around the statue of George II. Further British reinforcements are visible on the hill at the top left. The statue and some of the buildings depicted still stand (some with bullet holes caused by the battle). Although Peirson was killed in the early stages of the battle, the painting shows Peirson (wearing white, at the centre of the painting under the large Union Flag, supported by other officers), and being shot down leading the final charge, giving him a more heroic role and fate. To the left, his black servant Pompey avenges his master by shooting the sniper. It is believed that the depictions of the officers supporting the stricken Peirson are true portraits; the black servant of auctioneer James Christie was the model for Pompey, although it is unclear whether a black servant played a role (there is no suggestion in contemporaneous sources). Copley modeled the civilians fleeing to the right on his wife, family nurse and children. Peirson became a national hero, and the painting drew crowds when it was first exhibited at 28 Haymarket in May 1784, with admission charged at 1 shilling. The Tate Gallery purchased the painting in 1864. Today, a copy appears on the 10 Jersey pound note.

More purchases from Capex '78. Why buy one single stamp, when a sheet will return so much more 20 years down the road? Well, not so much! Three Europa '78 sheets.

This issue was very eye-catching. So much so that I bought full sheets of the ½d-10p values. Here is the sheet of 10p. I always did like this set, along with its predecessor. Most of the earlier Jersey were quite nice. Courvoisier was and still is my favourite printer.

The most philatelically interesting issues from Jersey are the stamps from the German occupation period (my holdings below), then it's all modern stuff, which can be topically interesting, but in recent years they have gone overboard with too many issues on all sorts of random topics. I did collect Jersey for a few years then stopped. If you like complication, there are some of the definitive self-adhesive issues with multiple variations which can be difficult to get around.

I love Jersey, but just up to 1985 or so. No issues with catalogues, renden. You do know of Scott's do you not? Most libraries have them in stock if you don't want your own personal copy.

Seabirds and Waders from the House of Questa. Thought I'd better add it now before it goes to pastures new.

I am still in the process of updating my catalog values from 2017 to 2021, no need to make a separate thread for Jersey as NOTHING HAPPENED!! 2021 values unchanged from 2017. Maybe there will be another "line by line" review for the 2022 catalog?
Hopefully, now that I am past close for work, I can post results of some other countries soon.

Part of a bulk lot recently purchased were a bunch of signed Jersey first day covers, from the 1980's to mid 1990's. Signed by the artist Alan R Copp, who won a competition for designing the Christmas stamps in 1981. Nice letter (I have blanked out the address) from the artist to someone he met holidaying in Jersey and very kind to send them. Graham

Two Superman first day covers from 7th June 2013. Gimmicky but with some justification, Superman star Henry Cavill is from Jersey. The stamps were designed by True North. The 45p stamp launches an augmented reality app through Smartsy which features film trailers and an introduction by Henry Cavill The 55p stamp is transparent The 60p stamp is printed on silver foil. The 68p stamp is heat sensitive. The 80p stamp contains Jersey granite. The 88p stamp glow in the dark. The miniature sheet is lenticular and shows Superman flying across the image. See this link and click on the miniature sheet. Scan_20210213 by Daniel, on Flickr

As I mentioned on the Whatcha Stamping thread, I am amassing Jersey once again. Sold long ago, now getting it back. But my #1 Jersey will be this stamp...
A nice squared circle cancel of a common Queen Victoria 1d stamp. Too bad it wasn't a smidgen to the left to give me a clear view of the day, maybe the 26th. The stamp itself is a bit ragged, but the cancel is fantastic!

In all the years collecting Jersey, of all the catalogues I have perused, of all the articles I have read, I have never seen any examples of metered post! Until a recent auction, that is. I bid the max I'd pay for this and ended up getting it for ½ that price. May 31, 1937, a perfect strike on the envelope, or were these issued as such. In any case, Mr. Phillips, a philatelist made up this cover, and no doubt more. I'm glad it is now in my collection! Are there any other examples out there? I'd say it was quite the find!

Jersey Swastika Overprints Thanks rod222 ... Wonderful clipping. A great philtoid (philately + factoid ... I like to learn at lease one a day, smile] The unissued 1940 stamps have also given rise to a not-quite-so-wonderful assortment of forgeries. Here's one set I bought for my forgery collection a few years ago. I bought it at a show but I've seen people selling them on eBay as well (and sometimes not being very honest about it them being forgeries. They're not even good forgeries ... notice the date. I suppose that's so they can say they are just selling 'examples' or 'fantasy' issues - after the fact of course.

Hugh Hugh, probably safe to say ALL opts for sale today are forgeries, I have read only 2 sheets of essays were printed.
See poss quantities Great Britain Overprint Society Great Britain Overprint Society Tall Tales or True ?The design of the German Occupation issues, were designed by one, Colonel N V L Rybot April Fool's Day. The one penny Jersey stamp, contained in each corner, a TINY "A" After the war Col. Rybot revealed the 4 "A's" in each corner , stood for a latin sentence "Ad avernum, Adolphe atrox" Loosely translated "Go to hell, atrocious Adolphe" Source : Mr. Blair Stannard, Canada. On the ½d green there are 4 other letters, AABB "atrocious Adolphe, bloody Benito" ? 2002 Ms Jennifer Toombs, Stamp Designer Jersey Scott circa 0072A Booklet 1972
