Rodney, I'm always amazed at what reference materials you unearth!
(And I'm still appreciative of your recommendation of _An Illustrated History of Stamp Design_. That's been a great read!)

Thanks Dave, (and I am always amazed is how courteous you are ) I'll give you another recommendation.......... "The Guinness book of Stamps, Facts and Feats" by James Mackay. (Actually, the same author. "William Finlay" was the name James Mackay was hiding behind) This book holds endless fascination. .............and Yes, these are Stanley Gibbons colour chips, don't rely on them of course, they can be vastly different depending on the scanner.

Thanks, Rodney! ... I may have seen that title in a local library. I'll check around and otherwise buy a copy.
As for the color guide, I actually have a copy of the SG, but I liked how you pulled things together. I very much agree that scanners can skew colors, and, in my experience, that seems to really be true in the red-blue/purple range.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Caveat: References are only valid to the issue of the book, eg The GB machins would now be the longest issued series. Facts must change as we speak. Example

Well, I am known for my frugality -- but in this case, taking a look at a library copy will help me gauge how much I might want to spring for a closer-to-new copy.

Well, I am known for my frugality -- but in this case, taking a look at a library copy will help me gauge how much I might want to spring for a closer-to-new copy. Hey! only joking. Frugality is good. I follow "The Barefoot Investor" here is a paragraph from last month's ...... One Simple Rule After speaking with literally thousands of young people in their 20s and 30s, the financial mistakes (or learning lessons), are never ending – but there’s only one dead-set giveaway that tells me whether a young person is going to be financially successful. It has nothing to do with their current income, or their education. It’s whether they’ve made a habit of saving money. Not just for their next holiday or a new car, but habitually spending less than they earn. It’s a trait that’s shared by every single wealthy person I know.

By the way, Rodney, I did manage to snatch a new copy at a pretty good price, closing on eBay last night. Didn't want to say anything until the deed was done. It should arrive next week, and I'm looking forward to it. Many thanks for your recommendations!
