I need some serious advice please. I think that I would like to sell most of my collection, while retaining some individual favourites and all of my engravers collection. This would mean selling stamps, covers, postmarks, and paraphernalia. What is the best method? Thanks

What kind of time frame? Would you take time to break out and list individual items over months? Or a quick strike in one or a few larger lots?

If in Perth, I could have put you onto a "stamp descriptor" a fellow who lists and describes stamps for auction. If the collections are mid range to advanced you would get a fair appraisal. I thing putting them through an auction house is your only avenue, expect a low as quarter catalogue plus fees. Try and get advice from a decent sized club in your vicinity.

My collection(s) are nothing great just pretty average...probably not worth going to a public auction. I am not sure what I am going to do yet, but many thanks for your help/

Let us know. I'm particularly interested at the moment in some of the classical era Spanish and Portuguese colonials.

Well, Perfs, as you see there are some collectors here with interest. Perhaps a trial run with a few lots here and ebay, see if your targets are met. I can imagine it could be harrowing, selling a collection one has nurtured over the years.

Thank you for all the input; unfortunately have little or no Eire or Spain or Portugal stamps (those few I have are because of the engravers and I am likely to keep those). I think Rod has put forward a good plan...now all I have to do is get doing it! ahhh... inertia is a very bad thing!

Perf here is my 2 cents worth. What ever you are selling first look at ebay and see what type of price they are selling for. Ebay will pretty much tell you what the current real word prices are. Also look at the auctions with low starting bids, quite often prospective bidders will bookmark these lots or place a bid via sniper software. In the past I did quite well listing at 99c and letting the market determine the sale price. Another thing is have a but it now price with make an offer.
If you are worried about shipping costs one way to make it attractive to buyers is to list say 10-20 items in the collector area and combine shipping. This will give buyers some value and also make your sales more appealing.
Factor in ebay fee's which are roughly 9% plus paypal fee's. If you sell a single item for 99c you are looking at clearing around 70c. eBay will also take the 9% on your shipping costs. I like to add 50c on actual postage costs to cover these amounts after all they call is shipping and handling fee,s.
If you do go the ebay route make sure you post links to your auction on this or other forums it will help drive traffic to your sales. You can also stick a few lots here as Rod said to test the waters. LondonBus is a good example to take a page from.
Maybe Admin might have a live auction in the near future.

In the U.S., ebay takes 10% of the item price and the shipping cost. Paypal takes another $0.30 per transaction plus 2.9% of the total (sale price plus shipping charge). Selling individual items at low prices can often leave one with a loss if also factoring in each item's original cost. As Jack said, combined shipping provides an incentive to the buyer and helps the seller avoid multiple Paypal transaction charges.
Did I hear someone suggest a TSF live auction...

Perfs may want to have a test run first Steve, to get acclimatised to sales. I recently saw a CV $9000 stamp sell for $99 with a no reserve auction.

Perfs you have been around a long time. Are these thoughts that have been around your head a long time or something that has just came up? In other words I assume you have been thinking about this a long time and not just something causing you to or your about to act on impulse. Breaking them down by smaller groups even smaller than separate countries will bring you more money and be easier to sell than trying to sell them as a whole collection. There are the sales areas in some of the other Forums you belong to as well as EBAY, Craig's List and selling to a Stamp Company or through a Stamp company on consignment. So there are lot's of options.

Thanks @tinman it's just something I have been thinking about for a while. I have lots of half-completed stuff and I feel that I would be happier if I could focus onto just a couple of areas.
