One of the noticeable characteristics of the reds is the blueing of the paper. This resulted from the reaction between the moisture used to dampen the paper and the ink. The moisture caused the prussiate of potash in the ink to become prussian blue. This often assumed a slightly greenish tint when the paper was gummed. This effect was less in the area of the Queen's portrait because less ink was used. This gave rise to the effect known as 'ivory head.'

On the face side there is a little fragments of a hinge that I would like to remove. Is it safe to soak? Will soaking effect the current markings of the ivory head?

Great Post Boss! never seen an ivory head before. Soaking? unknown Always assume worst case. Leave as is until confirmation. Search how safe "hinge lift off " solution is, perhaps.

Jack, get a Q-tip, dab in warm water. Dab gently on the hinge. Carefully try to remove with tongs. If still sticky, keep dabbing.

Did the Q-tip trick, the hinge remnant lifted or should I say slid off the stamp.
