Is the 2013 Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps the best source to learn about Canadian Stamps? Or is the Scott's a better choice. Since I am new to collecting Canada Stamps. I not only do I want to learn what stamps were issued but something about each stamp.

I not only do I want to learn what stamps were issued but something about each stamp. Unitrade follows the Scott numbering system. As far as I know, it includes all the Scott listings. It also includes many other varieties. If you want to really specialize, Unitrade is probably the way to go.

Unitrade is used by most collectors of BNA I also rely on Darnell's and my old Holmes.Unitrade uses Scott numbers which makes it useful, the down side is since they co-operated they also have seemed to limit themselves to less specialized varieties. This is where Darnell fits in as well as presenting stamps in the order they were released.Holmes (no longer printed) had a well known staff and pre-dates unitrade. If you have to have one Unitrade will serve, if you want to specialize Darnell and possibly Van Damn are going to be of much help.

British North America. Includes Canada and all the provinces.
And to follow up, I agree with Mr Frog. I also have a Holmes which is very useful (as well as the Hansen book I mentioned on that other forum). If you can get hold of a Holmes as well you'll be laughin'!

The Unitrade catalogue is a great place get started and will likely remain your primary resource for building your collection. It is however, a little short on info about the stamps beyond the specs and date of issue. There are tons of other books delving into specialized areas that have a lot more information about the stamps they are focused on. If you find an area/issue of particular interest I am sure the gang here can recommend some resources pertaining to your interest. Another great resource I like for background info on stamps is the Canadian Postal Archive. There is a little write up for each stamp or issue from 1851 through 2010 when the archive was... well archived.

Jamesw I found a Holmes on EBAY but it is a 1949 edition. $8.00 + $15 shipping. That sounds a little steep but is that a good edition and a fair price?

I agree with the Frog. Mines a 1963. '68 was the last year it came out, I believe. $8 sounds pretty good, and expect the shipping to be steep. These book do weigh a little bit and that's going to increase the shipping costs. I got mine from my favourite stamp dealer. If you can find a dealer who sells books too, you're all set.

In response to this 2014 thread, reactivated lately, as a Canada stamp collector, my primary Canada cat. is "Unitrade" and have a 2018 copy. Though it does not have all varieties, it does have the constant ones plus #s agree with Scott for the usual stamps. I like having the Provinces present as well as BOB and "proof" data. When the new issue comes up, I will buy it - very reasonable price as compared to other catalogues. The only way I could identify this N.B. proof pair (10Pii) was with Unitrade and valuation is also given - already showed it in a page but I use it here to make my point about this Catalogue. René

I have the 2018 Unitrade and I think a 2017 edition. They fill me needs for my Canadian Collecting needs. I doubt very much that I will purchase any newer versions if published. Even then there will have to be some extraordinary updates of new information to make it worth my while. I have a couple of older versions from the 1970’s and 1980’s. They have been a great resource over the years. For any of the modern stamp issues I will use what ever online resources I can find and that give me the info I need.

I have the 2014 addition and I figure it is the last one I will buy. I'm 73 years old. It will suit me just fine.

What I collect: My main collecting area is focused on Canadian stamps printed from steel engraved plates. Specifically re-entries and constant plate varieties.

The references given earlier are excellent. I have them all. Two more you might consider if you start specializing are STAMPS OF BRITISH NORTH AMERICA, by Fred Jarrett and THE POSYAGE STAMPS AND POSTAL HISTORY OF CANADA, Winthrop S. Boggs. Both of these have some really good information on the early issues of Canada stamps. If you decide to collect just a certain issue there are many specialized catalogues for specific issues.

I picked up a 2016 Unitrade catalog earlier this year from a dealer at a show. It cost me $15, and it's been a great resource. I think I got a good deal.

I kinda thought so. He was asking $20. I had bought some stamps from him, so I asked him if he'd go $15, it was all the cash I had left at the time.
