Seeing as the Afars and Issas thread is not very much populated yet, let's add a few issues, starting first with this animal series:

Hi Rene renden: What's the enigma? The color variation? My best guess is that you have a portion of a color proof strip. Here is one full color proof strip, and a separate set of five individual proofs that are close to what you have (neither have that nice purple you have):

René p.s. I wish there was a cat showing some objective data on these

René p.s. I wish there was a cat showing some objective data on these I think it's too niche of a market for the catalog makers, as the market is seems to be established by some of the larger French and German dealers/auction houses. There's only so much room to list/value all of the combinations of one specific issue. Some of the variables I'm seeing are: 1. the cut of the strip, is it straight, or are their mangled cuts? 2. the name of the engraver. Gandon is more popular than other engravers, he just is. I have my own personal preferences, and I'm definitely skewing towards a particular engraver lately. To me, this is the key driver of value. 3. the popularity of the country. Afars and Issas has some some really interesting issuances for color proofs. I don't collect it, yet, but I see the attraction. Seems to be a plethora of solid dealer material. 4. overall popularity of the issue, is it iconic, or just nice to have? I do see that my new to me Dallay 2008 catalog has a value for your Afars and Issas imperf set at 35 € and 60 € for the "épreuve de luxe". But I personally value color proofs higher than a regular imperf, so I think you're somewhere in between those two numbers. But that's the set price, so I don't know? That purple is awful nice

The color trial proofs were generally printed in sheets of 25. Each of the first three or sometimes four rows would be in single solid colors. The last rows would alternate the colors with one or two final stamps mixing colors. I have never had a full sheet, I've only seen two or three. Mostly you will only find stamps cut from the sheets. I have several of those and they generally go for the same price as the production imperfs.
