Hey, all --
Some of you look familiar from other sites! Like most of you, I'm hoping to find a calm, stress-free, enjoyable place to discuss philately. And I hope we'll continue to see more familiar faces as well.
I've been mostly a collector of Japan for more than 25 years. I'm now getting to the point where I'm not buying that much and am instead beginning to downsize (or "deaccession", as the museums call it!) by having a small store on BidStart. So far, I've uploaded maybe 0.1% of what I intend to.
I'm not on here to flog my store, however. What I do value is an amalgamation of collectors of all interests and experience levels, where we can help each other learn about areas outside of our own specializations. I certainly have stamp id questions of areas beyond my own, and I will certainly try to help answer any questions about Japanese philately that I'm able to.
Wishing this board much success!
-- Dave

A warm welcome Philatarium. I think we all share your hopes for a calmer, stress-free, enjoyable place to discuss philately. I will certainly work hard to help make TSF that place. Great store on bidStart by the way. I have set up a little shop there too...

Thanks the kind words, Perfs12 and Westy! I am very hopeful for this board!
And in keeping with the spirit of the board introductions indicating where people come from, I've edited my thread title to reflect that I'm in the Los Angeles area.

Welcome aboard philatarium, I don't know much about Japanese stamps and I am looking forward to learning much. Do Japanese stamps have some history in engraved issues?

Perfs14 (Alex, right?): There are engraved issues among the earlier Japanese stamps. If you're thinking about the bi-colored ones, like those that are characteristic of the British Commonwealth, there are a few that are quite nice, but not too many like that.
Ironically, however, the early era of Japanese issues are all hand-engraved (手彫り, or "tebori" in Japanese), which means that each plate position is often a little different one from the other. It makes it easier for plating, but creates a real challenge in detecting genuine from forgeries, since nothing is consistent. I'm still studying how to spot the genuine from the forgeries. (I expect that to take the rest of this lifetime and much of the next!)
I won't be able to spend some quality time with my scanner until probably later on this week at the earliest, but may try to scan and show some of them.

And I'm happy to report that the Japanese characters I used in the post above look correct on my screen! That does not happen on any other stamp discussion board on which I participate, so that's great news and perhaps a strong selling point for this board for those of us who collect countries beyond the Western alphabet! -- Dave

Zipper: you forgot to say "beautiful downtown Burbank"! (Maybe you're too young to know the reference.) Actually, until last year, I used to live about 20 min away from there. The closest Ikea was there. I'm now another 45 minutes further east (and near a different Ikea). ... I grew up in the South, but came to California for college in the SF Bay Area, then ended up here for work, and just never left.
I believe I recall your saying you're in Chicago, which I love. I've been there a few times on business. Always love the architecture, the museums, and the food. (Just not a huge fan of the humidity in the summer and the cold off the lake in the winter!)

I remember "beautiful." Just hate typing.
Humidity high here now. I live on the lakefront, and the winter winds are killer. They blow 6 foot drifts a block long every few years. Just a couple of years ago they stranded hundreds on Lake Shore Drive. Rescue teams were sent out for them.
Have you taken the Wendella boat architecture tour down the river and out on the lake? They're docked on the SE corner of Michigan Ave. and Wacker Drive. I recommend it. It's really cool to be on a boat down on the Chicago river, looking up at the skyscrapers!

Zipper: Thanks for the boat tour suggestion! It sounds like an amazing experience, and it's now on the list. Unfortunately, I haven't been there in several years, and with no trip anticipated at this time, but that suggestion will be tucked away for the next time the opportunity presents itself!
And Kg5: Thanks very much! And to you, too!

It's really cool to be on a boat down on the Chicago river, looking up at the skyscrapers! Well, talk about reviving an old thread, how's this for you, Dave? Glad that you're getting active on TSF again these days! I enjoyed your comment about the boat tour, Zip! My wife and I did that tour 3-4 years ago when we were in Chicago visiting some good friends there, and it was terrific. What made it even better is that one of our friends is an architect, so he was able to add a lot of interesting comments to the tour as well. Anyway, with a little bit of luck, I am hoping to meet Dave ( Philatarium ) today or sometime during my stay here in So Cal!
