I've been talking about it for long enough. Been working on it for about a year now. I'm done! It's been researched and edited to death. I've acquired all the material I can to date (much of it you've seen on the forum already). There are a couple of holes I'd love to fill, but can't (time and/or money) and some pieces I'd love to find better examples of (some day, some day!). But I think I've reached the end. This will be presented at my club bourse on October 18. But it's world premier is here for you tonight. Lady's and gentlemen, the history of Canada's War Tax from the First World War. Hope you like it.

I am sure any Philatelic magazine would like to publish this. Meant in no way as criticism, but as a courteous "proof read" 2 small errors Page 10 "sparking wine" Page 12 "prevolent" (Prevalent) You are a gifted man.

Thanks Rod, and everyone else for all the 'likes'. Wouldn't you know the spelling mistakes were on the two pages with some of the heaviest or fussiest mounting. I may leave them and hope for the best (though my own fussy side will probably get the better of me). I always forget how much I enjoy research projects like this. Lots of help from my growing philatelic library, google, The Vincent Greene Society and you folks here and at SCF (this is turning into an Oscar speech!)

James, the honorarium you'd receive for publication in AP could help you acquire some of those missing articles!

Just thinking aloud...... This would be a tad scary, Philatelists are a picky bunch One wonders how you may pass your work for correctness and factual accuracy ? or do you fly by the seat of your pants? Once published, collectors come out of the woodwork to critique. Must take courage, but we all learn by making mistakes. Would one consider sending to BNAPS prior to publication? Thoughts?

Steve and Rod (and everyone else). Thanks for the considerations regarding publishing this. The gent I met at the Vincent Greene Foundation (Leon) also suggested I might want to consider approaching BNAPS about publishing this (they do small booklet publications as well as the larger works). It's certainly a consideration and I think a logical next step. For this exhibit I was limited to 12 pages (making up a two frame exhibit), which in itself was a challenge, editing down the information and selecting pieces to show. I do have other covers and cheques I would be interested including. I simply didn't have enough material for a larger exhibit. The next exhibit sizes are much larger (I'm still trying to understand the intricacies of exhibiting. It's can become very picayune.) I had, in working on this, also wanted to expand the thesis to include an international aspect (Commonwealth overprints for example) and even other wars (US Civil War era proprietary, Spanish Civil War, Spanish Carlist war, War savings stamps, modern examples, blah blah blah) and have even started collecting examples. Developing this into a publication would certainly allow me to do this. But Rodney is correct. Factual accuracy is essential, and I will have to start backtracking and collecting a bibliography. Didn't bother since this was only a one off.
So the search for material will continue (saw some match books at an antique market yesterday, but none of the imprints were war tax, only excise). In the meantime, I will correct the mistakes made on pages here, updating in due course, and go on my merry way. Cheers. J.

Ok gang. Tomorrow is unveiling day (though you saw it here first). Have revised pages 6, 10, 11 and 12. 10 and 11 were major rewrites and layout change. Had purchased the fourth surcharged stamp to appear on page 11, but as of todays post, still now show, so we proceed without.
In retrospect, some of the pieces need upgrading, but I think they tell the story, which was my main purpose.
This project was fun and informative (and kept me off the streets). I'd encourage all of you who haven't already, to try your hand at an exhibit. I think you'd surprise yourself!
Thanks again for all your help.
J.

Good Luck James (although Luck has nothing to do with it) a great presentation. Here is an image you may wish to keep for your digital records.

Thanks Rod. Yes those precancels are pricey. I have a few holes to fill in this collection, and they are a major part of it. Maybe I'll find some tomorrow.

Hello all. In the end it was a good day. My exhibit won a gold medal, as well as the club's President's Award for Best in Show and the Bill Irvine Memorial Award for best British North America. My work here is done. Cheers!

Too late to be included in the exhibit, but my FX30 surcharged war tax stamp finally arrived. Should have been on page 11. Will now appear on an addendum page.
